My iPad shows it will sync with my iMac when the iMac is available.  I would like to have it sync with my MBPro instead.  All of this is with iTunes, of course.

Thanks for your help and suggestions.

You need to authorize your MBP with your Apple ID and password.  Then in settings MAKE SURE YOU TURN OFF automatically open when device is connected.  You do this because you want to transfer your purchases to your iTunes on your MBP.  Once you've transfered your purchases, you can then sycn with the MBP, but remember that music you might have downloaded from CD on your iMac, won't be in your iTunes library on your MBP.

The iTunes library can be moved to the laptop as well.

What exactly about rbrylawski's instructions don't you understand? Connect the iPad to your laptop.
