Mine is overheating. The heat is reduced when the brightness is reduced but what's the point of that? It drains the battery fast too. And exchange doesn't seem to be a solution since they all appear to have the same defect issue. I am going to wait one week to see if there are any solutions from Apple, if not, they can have it. I am very disappointed. Been an Apple cool aid drinker for the past 12 years. But I may have had my fill.

I agree roger I'm an avid apple fan, who usually thinks they do no wrong  I might be going back to an iPad 2 also.  The  hot heat and long recharge times and inability to use on 100% brightness seem like a deal breaker for me.

Now I wonder if my eyes will let me unsee the glorious retina display

Thx for the information. I will hold on the new one and see if Apple will provide any solution for the problem. I think they should coz its an universal problem and a lot of people gonna return the new one if the problem cannot be solved. But if there really is no solution, I will have to return it and keep using my iPad 2. I really love the screen of the new one.

Mine seems to get very warm...much more so than my original or my iPad 2. What is the Apple Store Return policy?

Mine does get warm on the lower left side. Not super hot, but uncomfortably warm. I hope it is a defect that Apple will fix. I will return otherwise.

Yes swap it. Mine does not do this.

Apple give a 1 year guarantee to cover these things.

Just a thought... How many of you used the iPad out of the box without fully charging first?  Are you ones with the heat issues?

I would suggest fully recycling the charge using an app like battery magic first and see if it solves before returning.

I synced mine then left to fully charge out of the box, and have no hear issues.

Day 4 after best improvement yet.  After letting the batterydraincompletely and recharging to fully capacity.  The new iPad is totally cool and the battery is depleting every slowly now, like my iPad 2.  I think I've been through 3 or 4 recharge cycle.  Things look promising. :)

I agree. No issues with mine either.  Got a bit warm when first loading my data but fine since.  I'd return it if over heating.

Sweet.  I think the battery needs conditioning.  I'm lying in the bed with mine now.  I couldn't stand it if it was too warm to put under the sheets :)

It's been exactly 8 hours of being charged overnight, and has went from 2% to 79%. Meaning it adds a10% charge, per hour, thus it must charge 10 full hours! That is insane!

Beers...sounds like you may have an issue...Mine charged overnight last night (from about 12:30am to 6:30am) and it was at 100%...when it reached 100% I dont know but its way better than what you are experiencing....I would bring it back for an exchange...

The new iPad does get hot after 20 min. Looks like I'm not the only one with this problem. Maybe apple should call this new iPad, your new frying pan also. After 20 m cook some eggs on it..  Apple should really release something for this. People shouldn't invest all this money and buy another iPad with upgraded specs same like design 90% identical and have this issue. It should be fully tested by engineers before laying out in market.  Yes it does look like the warming generates from the bottom left of back of iPad.

I forgot to mention that I was using my extension cable to charge. I never had an issue with the extension for my iPad 2, so I figured it would work just as well. Tonight I'm going to plug it straight into the power adapter, and see if this improves. Could an extension cable really effect the power process, by that much? 10% charge per hour, because of just an extension cable?
