Firstly, you need to turn on the iTunes Status column in the iTunes browser. That will tell you how the song is actually being identified. Pull down View > View Options, select "icloud status" and click the OK button. Once a song is successfully processed it will have a status of either "matched" or "uploaded." Which leads me to...
Secondly, once a track in your iTunes library is successfully processed it will not have a cloud icon in the "iCloud Download" column. There will only be something in that column if the song has not yet been processed by iTM (it is "waiting), there is some sort of error, or the original track has been deleted from the library and it is availble for download from the cloud.
Thirdly, just because a song is available in the iTunes store does not automatically mean it will be "matched." There have been a lot of discussions about this on the forum. Please do a search and you'll be able to read them.

arh, severe slap on the back of my wrist for not knowing that no icon meant all was OK!
The inability match all iTMS content is pants. I did do a number of searches, but after ploughing through a good few pages of answers, comments and rants (of which I added to) I couldn't find an explanation.
I still have over 3,000 'items to upload' so I suspect that I won't really know ow good/bad this service is for some weeks.
Thanks for your tip tho.
