I have the same problem. I search everywhere and even went to my local apple authorised distributor to seek answers but no one seems to know how to get the iphone USB interface back.

I read from other threads that says after installing the iphone configuration utility, the iphone USB interface will be lost...
did u install the utility software? For me, i had installed the software.

I installed the software, but as fare as I know the USB stuff does not changed by the installation.
As I noticed, I removed it by myself by accident.
I search the web, this forum and all time the same problems, but no solution. From my point of view its a shame for user friendly Apple.

I get it back working. Great deal. It was the iPhone configuration utility, which causes the trouble.
What I have done
I switch on the iPhone hotspot via USB
I checked the system logs and found the following entry
06.04.12 18:39:40,531 com.apple.kextd: Can't load /System/Library/Extensions/AppleUSBEthernetHost.kext - no code for running kernel's architecture.
I searched for that message and found the solution in https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3787866
I remove the kernel extension and reinstall the last version of iTunes.
Gread deal, it works without any reboot. Just out of the box.
