I received my 3rd gen iPad on Fri.  It seems to hate syncing.  First time up, it had a problem and I tried several ubs ports until one worked.  Now each time I attempt to sync either the iPad is not found, an internal error occurs and ends sync or iTunes hangs.

Let me add that at least half the time, iTunes thinks it's my iPhone, not iPad, that is connected.

You have rebooted and restarted everything - correct? Quit iTunes, restarted the Mac restarted the iPad and then tried syncing again?

Correct.  I did the quit, restart, try again.  Also weird is that when I connect to an internal usb port, the iPad reads not charging.  I've tried 3 different cables.

From everything that I have read, it takes a bit longer to charge the new iPad battery than the two previous iPad models and it takes more power than most USB ports supply in order to charge it. The iPad may read "not charging" but it may still be charging at a very slow rate - a trickle charge at best.

Apple has always recommended that you use the power adapter and plug it into a wall socket for most efficient charging. If you must charge from the Mac, turn the iPad off and leave the Mac running and awake. It really is better to plug the iPad into the wall socket using the power adapter.

Is the iPad syncing now? Do your phone and iPod sync OK?

Read this about charging the iPad battery.

My iPhone 4 and ipod sync fine.  The iPad is still has same issues.  Thanks for the charging pointer.

Have you tried rebooting the iPad. Hold down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10 seconds until the Apple logo appears on the screen - ignore the red slider.

Did you set up your iPad as new or did you restore from a backup? Do you have a recent backup from which you could try restoring your iPad to see if that helps?

If the phone syncs OK I think we can rule out the cable as the problem, but I'm not convinced that the USB port is not the problem. You are using a port on the computer correct - not on a monitor? Your profile says Mac Pro - meaning a tower - not a MacBook Pro?

I haven't tried re-booting the iPad, but I will.  Yes, I do now have a backup on my Mac as well as iCloud.

Yes, I'm attempting to sync via a usb port on my Mac Pro.
