Hi all - I thought this best belonged in OS X Lion discussions even though Mail is affected.  I think it may be OS related as the same thing ins happening with my Keychain app.

Basically when I open Mail or Keychain Access the app hangs for a long time - about 2-3 minutes before becoming responsive.

Mail is not as bad as Keychain.  Mail is pretty much fine after the initial delay but Keychain hangs pretty much every time i try to navigate the UI making it unusable.

Any clues as to how I might start troubleshooting this?

Please read this whole message before doing anything.

This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.

    Step 1

The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.

Enable guest logins and log in as Guest. For instructions, launch the System Preferences application, select Help from the menu bar, and enter “Set up a guest account” (without the quotes) in the search box.

While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.

Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem(s)?

After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.

Note: If you’ve activated FileVault in Mac OS X 10.7 or later, then you can’t enable the Guest account. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.

    Step 2

The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login.

Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:

    • Be sure your Mac is shut down.
    • Press the power button.
    • Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
    • Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).

Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.

The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.

Test while in safe mode. Same problem(s)?

After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode.) Post the results of steps 1 and 2.

Thank you for that broad and detailed trouble shooting guide that should be employed when the cause of an issue is utterly unknown - they describe the procedure I use if I have to figure out any issue that is mystifying me but I was hoping that light may be shed on my specific symptoms.

So I'll rephrase my question - in the first instance, before begining with the systematic troubleshooting - are the symptoms I described indicative of any know issue?

    Thanks again.

    No.

This issue is still not resolved although a shut down and restart does seemed to have helped the keychain issue - Mail still hangs on opening.

Results of steps 1 and 2?

Hi Linc - so you know I had already established that it was login specific (I run a test login for just these sorts of issues which crop up from time to time).

As for the process of elimination that you outlined that is my next step when time allows - probably early next week.

In the meantime I am asking these on these forums for specific clues - not general troubleshooting advice.

Please don't take this the wrong way but there is a step that makes sense *before* going through an item by item isolate teardown-and-test troubleshooting proceedure and that is to ask if anyone else has experienced similar issues.

That is what i am doing here on this forum.

I assure you that i know how to troubleshoot my system but I am not at that stage yet.

Unless you have any specific insight to the problem at hand, please rest assured that I know how to isolate and test for an issue like this - I usually just don't consider it a first resort when other people's experience could help in the first instance.

    Thanks again

Don't take this the wrong way, either, but if you knew how to troubleshoot your system, the problem would have been solved four days ago. Unsubscribing now.

    Wow.  That was unnecesary.

To anyone else who is experience a similar issue feel free to subscribe to this and I will post when i solve the problem.  I'd like to ignore the trolling and move on.
