I am in a hotel with my laptop and new ipad3. The laptop wifi reception is as strong as it gets, but the iPad only registers a weak signal. Anyone else having similar problems? Any suggestions?

    ZERO ISSUES!

    Just got lucky I guess  . . .

My new Ipad 3 also gets bad WI FI reception. As I watch youtube videos for example they constantly stop and go the loading process is quite poor. Is this going to be fixed with the next software update? Can Apple answer this?

Thats the million dollar question. I dont think we know yet. Anxiously awaiting word from Apple. I spent 30 mins on the phone to Apple Tech support in Australia and until my call they appeared to have no knowledge of the issue.

I experience the same dropout problems if I touch or hold the Ipad 3. If I put in on a table there appear to be no problems. Maybe the iPad 3 doesnt like to be touched? I had no such problems with my Ipad1 which loves to be held.

I have both iPad 2 and the new iPad, and I'm comparing the wifi performance. iPad 2 is working perfectly from both home and office. The new iPad getting disconnected after few minutes and I need to turn off the wireless then turn it on every time to get it reconnectd. Finally I stopped using it.

Hope Apple will come with an answer soon.

I had reported my experience at the Apple store, at the beginning of the week, comparing multiplie iPad 3's concurrently with an iPad 2, finally making the store manager and staff aware firsthand that there was a problem.  My story was repeated in a few news outlets online.

I had an illuminating moment calling the Glendale California store this afternoon and asking for the same manager.  I wanted to ask her opinion about the advisability of taking a chance on another unit - thinking that perhaps a more recent manufacturing batch had come in.

Her reaction floored me:  it was kind of like it had never happened, she hadn't seen that there was a problem or that the news was reporting an issue. She was almost confused that I was asking, like, "What do you mean, should you buy one and are the ones in stock any different?" I told her about the news stories since I'd been in the store.  She reported that nobody had had any problems, nobody had returned any units, etc.  but the way she said it didn't acknowledge that a problem even exists.

It strangely mirrors Apple's denial mode, or refusal to acknowledge mode.  And this woman had witnessed firsthand, three iPad 3 units recording wifi signals half the strength of the iPad 2.

    I was floored.

I'm having same issue with wifi but not like everyone else but I'm having it with my cellular data connection it's dropping signal constantly ! And I know for a fact it's not AT&T this time I have a ipad 2 rite here and 2 iPhone 4s with full service ! If I have my ipad vertical it's fine but if I turn it horizontal with the side that the smart cover is on at the top. So with me holding it from opposite side I'd smart cover. When horizontal and I hold it with with both hands on each end it goes from 5 bars to 1 and sometimes searching for service. Soon as I turn it back vertical it goes from 1 too 2....3.....4.............5 and it's back it does it every where im at. My wifi does it to but not as bad. But I have noticed even when not touching just let ipad set just to see what the signal does its up and down all day constantly 1to 5 bars up down up down ! It ***** ! I've talk to apple reset ipad and didn't fix it so Im calling back tomarrow and it's going back ! I can't believe no one else is having issues with cellular data signal just wifi or maybe ppl is to coughs up with the wifi to notice.  I've tried to make my ipad 2 and iPhone 4s to loose signal and it hasn't happened not even one bar with ipad 2 or iPhone 4s.  I sure hope this gets fixed I sure do love my ipad ! But I paid for a white 64gb + 4g to much to just say screw it ! It's do bad that I can't even use cellular data !

Changing your DNS setting to one such as openDNS (you can also use googles public DNS as well apparently but I haven't tried) has solved my poor wifi issues and cured the constant loss of wifi.

    Solution as follows

Settings > General > Network > Wifi > choose your network > DNS - change this to 208.67.222.222  (openDNS) or 8.8.8.8 (google DNS) and then save. Also turn off "ask to join networks"

I did this yesterday evening and now my new iPad works like a dream. I tried linking to my wifi again this morning with its original settings and within 10 mins and I had lost wifi connection again and had trouble re-establishing a link. Once I had joined the network again I change the DNS setting to the openDNS descibed above and once again my problem was instantly solved. Been using the new iPad solidly for the past couple of hours with no wifi problems at all.

I really hope this helps all those having the same trouble (and there seems to be plenty of us!) until apple post a patch as the wifi problem makes the new iPad practically impossible to use.

Let me know if this works for any of you so we can hopefully spread the word and get every one back to using their new iPads as effortlessly as we have come to expect.

I finally un boxed my iPad and ran speedtest on it and my laptop from a couple

of different locations in the house. The numbers show a pretty consistent difference of 2 mbs

between the two,, with the laptop being higher. They range between 12-16 download and

8-12 upload. This is using Verizon's Fios standard router. I also noticed that the ping time on the iPad

was always longer. Haven't tried any long term connect trials on the iPad.

So does it sound like I have a keeper with this iPad or do I punt and try again next month.

    Hi and greetz from Germany,

i got the same trouble like most of you, iP4s works fine iPad2 works fine MacBook Pro and Mac Mini are fine, but the "new" iPad (64 GB Lte) drops wifi after a couple of minutes, i got only apple hardware here (Extrem, Express and TC) everything is on the newest FW.

I tried the DNS "change" (thx mistadoov) and it seems to work for me so far.

So apple try it and help us.

Software patches or updates may mask the problem but won't fix it. If it were software every iPad3 would have the problem since they all have the same software release. Changing the DNS may mask it as well but it's not fixing it. The only way to test this is to take your new iPad 3 and slowly move away from your router or Fios, hotspot etc etc which are still routers and test for signal loss. If you can get past 30 to 40 feet with no signal loss you most likely have a good one. If you have to stay within 5 to 15 feet you don't.  The iPad2 has the same software IOS 5.1 as ALL the ipad3's there is no difference. The iPad2's consistanty work better than the ipad3's that exhibit the weak wifi.

Heathacliff .... I bet the manager acted like they'd never seen you before as well. I just can't understand why the stick there head in the sand on things like this.

Now ... If you have weak wifi, return it for a different device or get a refund and wait a month and try again. Apple will get worked out sooner or later but waiting around on a software patch to fix this problem won't help. Look at all the past posts. Also test on 5 ghz and 2.4 ghz bands not just 2.4ghz.  If you have a bad one it may or may not exhibit the death grip. It could only exhibit the distance issue with dropping out. Don't fool yourself, test it completely. Hope this helped at least a few of you.

Had my new I-pad 3 for a week now and it's my first I-pad. I really love it, but am bitterly dissapointed by the constant loss of wifi connection. I have replaced routers, and moved routers around and changed frequency - all to no avail. My laptop signal is very strong, my apple-tv woks fine, but the I-pad drops out for no reason. It is very disappointing for such a lovely device! I would love to find a work-round, as I don't want to take it back to the shop.

Get a replacement, you won't be happy till you do. Sorry but I went through 4 then took a refund and am waiting a month to try again.

Since a lot of us that purchased our defective iPads may be lucky enough to be dealing with a store that has the standard 14 day "no questions asked" return policy here's what I've done.

There is no stock right now on any colour 32mb wifi-only iPad so I showed the manager this ever-growing thread and informed him of my intention of returning my unit on day 14 if there is no stock to exchange my iPad by then. He went even further and said that if I come back on day 14 he'll just do a refund and allow me to repurchase the same unit on the spot and he'll give me another 14 days. We'll just keep it up until they either get more 32gb units in stock or I'll upgrade to a 64gb model...which is no longer in stock either at this time. He said we can just play this game until I get a fully functioning unit.

Since I've added a 2nd access point router on the 2nd level of my house the problem has been diminished AT HOME so I can live with this until I get one that functions as well as my iPad 1.

As for a few of you dealing with campus book stores (one poor fellow was even looking at a 15% restocking fee) with restrictive return policies I feel your pain...BUT...there's no way I would take that kind of treatment since you are dealing with an obviously defective unit. Ask for the manager and show them this thread. If that gets you nowhere then talk to the Dean. If that gets you nowhere then call Apple. You have rights.

    Cheers
