Q: Why does FCP X re-render projects that have already been rendered?

I've seen several posts about this problem, but have not seen a solution/explanation yet.  I have a project in Final Cut Pro X that I've finished editing.  I have background rendering on and I wait until the entire project is fully rendered.  I then shut down FCP.  When I restart, it reloads the project and then begins re-rendering it.  The whole thing.  This happens every time and the process takes quite a while (even though it's a short video.)  I've trashed my preference file, but still it does the same thing.  I can't even begin to tell you how much grief this has caused me.  So much so that I just used the word grief for one of the very few times in my life.  Honestly, I just bought this MacBook Pro (after years of struggling with Windows) in hopes that this would be better than a PC.  That doesn't seem to be the case.

Thanks for any help you can give me.

What version of the software? What version of the software was the project started in? What needs to be rendered? The whole thing? Why?

    Tom,

I am using Final Cut Pro X (10.0.3), the same program that the project was started in.  And as I said in my original post, when I re-open FCP after it has fully rendered the entire project, FCP RE-renders the whole thing.  It's doing it right now and I notice that there are just a few still shots in the timeline that are not being re-rendered, but everything else is.  The clips are mostly titles layered over each other with underlying audio.

I'm not sure why you asked me your final question, "Why."  That's MY question.  Why is it taking all that time to re-render a project that it just finished rendering?

Why does the whole project have to be re-rendered? The whole thing is covered in a title?

I've not see this in the current version with projects originally created in this version.

I don't know why it's happening but I suggest you trash your preferences and then turn off background rendering.

Did you optimize your media on import and are your project settings set to match the video frame rate that you imported?

    Tom,

I'm not sure why you again are asking me why the whole thing has to be re-rendered.  That is exactly my question.  Why does FCP X re-render the project every time I re-open it?  I didn't say the entire project is covered by a title.  I said "The clips are mostly titles layered over each other with underlying audio".  This is incredibly frustrating because the re-rendering process takes about 10 minutes.  And if I view portions of the project that aren't rendered, the playback is so choppy that it's essentially worthless.  I can't see the transitions or any effects clearly until after it is fuflly re-rendered.

Are you telling me that you've never heard of this probelm before?

    Andy,

    Thanks for the reply.

I don't know if you can see my original post.  In it, I said that I have trashed my preferences.  Turning off background rendering will of course stop the rendering process, but if I view the project unrendered, the playback is so choppy that it's essentially useless.  I can't clearly view the transitions or other effects until it's fully rendered.

    Thanks for the reply.

I only imported a few still shots.  There is no video, just the stills with some layered titles and audio.  No, I didn't optimize any of the media (jpeg files) on import.

Oh man, pjslo, I think your poor attitude got the best of you here.

Yes, the whole world IS here to help you, if you ask politely.

Take a deep breath, apologize, and perhaps one of the FCP Masters will hook you up.

I've noticed the same problem. It doesn't seem like everything needs re-rendering, but I've closed projects that have been completely rendered, and when I reopen them, there are large portions that are not unrendered.

I'll try to pay more attention to see if I can figure out exactly what's not staying rendered.

Could it be tied to the "not saving" bug where the undo becomes greyed out?

I think that would be the next thing to try. Highly compressed media (AVCHD and .jpeg) are difficult for software to process.

    Andrew,

I'm not sure what you're so upset about.  Can you tell me why you think I have a poor attitude?  I've never had anybody say that to me.  Honestly.  All I'm asking for is some advice on how to fix a problem I'm having with Final Cut Pro X.  I never said I expected anything more than some friendly advice.  So I asked in a friendly manner.

I see that I misspelled "problem."  I apologize for that error.

I am also seeing this - ussually it goes relatively quickly, but YES when I am working in my FCPX project, it will render when I am idle, and all the "orange line" above the storyline (from left to right / beginning to end)) renders and the orange line is completely gone and I have to often close FCPX (to get my RAM released) and when I re-open FCPX the project dutily returns with new areas that are showing as needing rendering - so the orange line reappears in segments of my edit AGAIN!  I don't have any answers though.

    stuckfootage,

Thanks for the reply.  I'll try that and let you know if it helps.  Still, why wouldn't FCP "see" the existing render files in the project folder and simply use those?  Does that make sense?
