I accidentally restored my new iPhone 4s the first time I connected it to iTunes.  Now I've lost all the photos and contacts I had on it!  Does anyone know if it can be found on the phone hard drive?  Does the photo recovery software I've seen online really work?

I think that is not easy, but  try to restore the last made backup form your iPhone. Maybe the Photos and contacts are in that backup. Or if you synchronized the contracts with for example Outlook, try to resynchronized them on your iPhone.

    Good luck

The iPhone does not have a hard drive - it has a flash drive or storage, and the first time a new iPhone is connected to iTunes that is or was used to sync with another iOS device, you are prompted to transfer the backup for another iOS device, or set up the iPhone as a new iPhone. This is not the same as restoring. Sounds like you chose the former. Chosing the later does not touch any data on the iPhone.

If you chose the former, the data is gone. You can try whatever this photo recovery software is you are referring to, which includes no guarantee.

Does iTunes automatically make a backup when you connect an iPhone or iPod?  After I accidentally restored my new phone and lost everything, we went on vacation and I took a few photos with it.  I'm hoping those didn't write over the memory where the lost photos were.  I'm so afraid to do anything with iTunes now!  Thanks for your help!

Does iTunes automatically make a backup when you connect an iPhone or iPod?

Only when syncing and as the first step when restoring an iPhone with iTunes.

There is no accidentally restoring an iPhone. This must be manually selected.

After manually selecting Restore, you are prompted to update your iPhone's backup as the first step.

Theoretically you are able to restore Data of a flash drive, even if you overwrite it more times, but this cost a lot of money and I think you would not pay so much just for a view pictures. But iTunes normally creates a Backup if a device is connected to it. But if you turned this feature in the settings of iTunes of it won't. But there should be a backup.

If the area of a flash drive is overwritten with other data, the chances for recovering the previously deleted data goes from possible to very unlikely, and the same with a hard drive.

But iTunes normally creates a Backup if a device is connected to it

Only when syncing if you have sync automatically selected when the iPhone or when any iPod or iOS device is connected. I don't have sync automatically selected when my iPhone is connected and my iPhone's backup is not updated simply by connecting my iPhone to iTunes.

You are right Allan, I say accidentally because it's not what I wanted to do but yes, I did select to restore.  I guess that's what happens when I don't know what I am doing!

If the photos can be recovered then that would be great but no, I don't want to spend alot of money to get them back.  If it's even possible!  It seems like quite a few people have this same problem.  We did have the sync automatically selected but I have since turned it off.  I'm trying not to mess up my iPhone anymore than it already is!  Thanks for everyone's help!

If you have synced your iPhone to iTunes on a computer before and have not synced it after you lost all your photos, you can get them back. But iTunes can't help. You need to get a third party iPhone data recovery software like Tenorshare iTunes Data Recovery, which helped me recover lost photos on iPhone 4 after factory restore before. You can give it a shot! Get it from http://www.any-data-recovery.com/product/itunes-data-recovery.htm

Tenorshare software didn't work on my niece's iphone to recover accidentally deleted data.  And we have yet to get our money back even though their website says "money back guarantee."

Apple should do a better job of informing customers about the Photostream back up and what happens when one syncs to iTunes. Very poor job communicating on Apples part.

There is nothing to communicate since photos/videos in the iPhone's Camera Roll are not touched with the iTunes sync process.
