One way to try to get the pictures is in to go to the first presentation that has the pictures and select the pic. Then go the Inspector>Metrics Tab and see if you see the file name listed. Then drag and drop that to the desktop. Now you should be able to add it back to the new Keynote.
That doesn't solve the problem, but might provide a work around until we can find the main problem.

Restarting Keynote solves this issue (how Windows! ).
I have also encountered this problem: duplicating a slide or an image gave a generic image placeholder with a question mark. Going to the inspector>Metrics and trying to drag and drop the file resulted in an error ("Keynote encountered an error. Please restart Keynote" but I could still work with the presentation afterwards). Restarting helped.

That´s ok. Restart the app resolve the problem.
