Q: Random prompts for someone else's Apple ID password after upgrade to iOS 5

I just installed iOS 5 (was previously on the beta via Developer program), and I'm having an issue where sometimes I'll get prompted for someone else's Apple ID password. It's different from the typical prompt in that the title of the dialog is "Apple ID Password", the Apple ID input field is editable, and it's NOT using the saved Apple ID from settings. Entering my Apple ID/password has no effect. The first time it appeared, it was installing the apps that were previously on the iPhone right after the upgrade. None of the apps would install. So, I went into the App Store, installed them manually, and everything was fine. In general, installing apps works fine - it uses my normal account.

 

I thought once I got all of the apps re-installed, the prompt would disappear (thinking the bug was related to the re-installation of apps after a restore). However, just now it appeared as I was syncing music to it via iTunes. I've tried restoring multiple times from backup, but it keeps happening. In the iPhone Settings, under Store, it's my Apple ID, and I've tried signing out and signing back in, but this has no effect. The Apple ID that's popping up isn't mine, and I've never seen it before. The phone (iPhone 4) was bought new over a year ago. Does anyone know how to fix this?

    I'm having the same problem after restoring from iCloud (not iTunes). It looks like our iCloud info and apple ids are not as secure as we would like them to be.

    I have the same problem only the apple id it's showing is my dads. I had synced his iPad to my iTunes and my husband has the same iPad so it appears that iTunes had no way to differentiate the two? First it asks me for mine, then it tells me password is wrong, then it asks for my dads, I select cancel, it downloads app updates. I have gone to my lap iTunes and deleted any reference that I can find to his iPad and will resync, I am hopeful that works. I have had to reset my password so many times not realizing it was asking for my dads so then it would lock me out. What a pain.

    First off, MDPPIT is 100% correct.

     

    I had this same problem, even called Apple about it under fear of privacy issues.  And honestly, if I searched for some of the e-mail addresses popping up, there were articles where others were having this problem.

    So... I finally figured out what was going on. 

    A few years back I had a friend who would use my computer... and it turns out that evidently he downloaded a bunch of songs off the internet.  Well, my iTunes is set to consolidate, and honestly, I have so much music that I didn't notice a few extra tracks.  To tell you the truth, a few of the tracks I thought I had downloaded and purchased myself! Evidently, that wasn't the case.

    In the past these were fine and didn't cause any problems as the only time the Apple ID was needed in the past was when they were originally downloaded.  And while Apple has changed to not really having digitally protected music, the original Apple ID sticks with the songs! 

    So, when you do an iCloud backup, it doesn't actually make a copy of your files.  It writes a file saying "this person had these applications: XXX, and this person had these songs: XXX, and here are the ID's associated with them."  But it doesn't store the individual songs or apps because that would just take up a tremendous amount of space.  So, instead it just remembers individual settings and such and applies them to the master APP or the master track for the song!  (which is why they invented iTunes Match... so they could just use the master track rather than having to backup your individual, crappy copy you ripped off a scratched up CD in the late 90s!)

     

    So... This is not an Apple problem or even a privacy problem... Really, it's more of a PIRACY problem! 

     

    My recommendation is this.  Follow the instructions mdppit gave for removing the songs.

    how did u "manually delete" the the wrong ID, especially in iOS 5.0.1?

    I tot the ID is shown, requesting only for the password, and there's no way to edit the shown ID?

     

    i'm urgently in need to update all my apps, as the app updates are increasing everyday!

    it's no use to me, to delete the app and download again, as the app data will be gone and i do not wish all my games/app data/saves gone.. only way to backup properly is to jailbreak & use 3rd-party cydia app to backup individual app data..

    seems like my account on my iPhone 4 is corrupted somehow.. =(

    hi BadPuppy.. mind tell me how did u "manually delete" the the wrong ID, especially using iOS 5.0.1? when it prompts me, the ID is always fixed and i can only type the password..

    pls help! thanks..

    I don't remember it's been a while, I didn't do it on 5.0.1.  Can you hit cancel or something when it pops up?

    i can hit Cancel, but it cancels the authentication part where it ask for the password, with the username already there and cannot be edited..

    sobs, so means i cannot resolve this issue..

    MDppit you were correct.  I went in and deleted the greyed out iTunes songs preparing to download and it fixed the problem.  Thank you very much for your help.

    hey there ej...

    the songs that remain on my iphone, are an album that a friend sent me, and yes it is in fact her apple id that keeps trying to authenticate as well.

     

    syncing with itunes did nothing for my problem, and the grey out tracks still remain,

    after deleting them from download que (on iphone)

    i have completely deleted my itunes library as well

     

     

    is this information imbedded into the icloud?

    how can i wipe this cleaN?which strategy would work, while still saving my contacts etc

    Hello everyone! I am having the same problem and I cannot resolve it. I keep getting popups for emails addresses that are completely unknown to me. I have tried to delete those songs from downloading in the iTunes app (on my phone under downloads) yet to keep reappearing like 5 mins later. I cannot find those songs ANYWHERE on my iPhone/Mac yet the problem STILL persists. All this started after restoring from iCloud and the popups occur when i charge my phone using the USB port and wireless sync. I have no idea how to fix this. I have attempted all the prior suggestions to no avail. PLEASE HELP

    Hi!

     

    I solved this problem (so far).

     

    Settings -> iCloud

     

    I saw that the iPad 3 in question was still trying to perform the restore that I did two days ago.  I told it to stop, got a few warnings, etc, that I clicked through.   

     

    This seems to have solved the problem immediately.  Been a few hours and no reoccurence.

     

    I'll let you know if it comes back.

    Can u elaborate on the steps you took to stop it from restoring? I see no such option.

    When I went to Settings -> iCloud -> Storage & Backup.  On the right column near the bottom the iPad advised me it was still doing the restore.   

     

    I know I'm not being very elaborate on what I did, but I was just looking at stuff that could be causing the issue.  Wiping the darn thing wasn't on my preferred options list , but I was headed that way I thought.  Then I saw it was still restoring and wondered if the music that was set to download was what the issue was.

     

    Hopefully this screen print will help.  I believe the option was located somewhere around where it now says "Back Up Now" in the right column.
