Q: iMac today or tomorrow?

Hi, I'm Luca.

I am a student so I don't have much money but I would buy an iMac.

Now, if I ask you when a new iMac model release, I'm sure you don't answer me because there are millions of sites witch write about rumors.

What I ask is if you think I should buy it now or if you advise me to wait a bit for a new iMac 2012 version.

I wouldn't tomorrow I'll go to buy this version and the day after tomorrow o between one month a new version will release.

Thanks for your time and good job to all.

PS: I would buy iMac 21.5" i7 2.8 1TB 4GB RAM.

You are right, nobody here knows until Apple announce it.

There is always a new model in the pipeline. Trouble is, knowing how long the pipelione is!

It really comes down to if you need a computer now or can you afford to wait. No one but Apple knows when new models will be released and unfortunately we can't speculate about future products on this forum per the Terms of Use we all agreed to so you either have to buy now or be patient.

Let us know what you decide to do.

Here are a couple of other things to think about:

First, are you aware of the availability of "Refurbished" iMacs?  There is a link on the www.apple.com website; scroll down, it'll be on the left side of the home page.  You can save some money and you get an iMac that's as good as new.  It won't be the absolute latest, just released model, but it may suit your needs.

Second, since you say you're a "student", have you checked out the "Education Store" on the www.apple.com website.  I don't know whether or not it is available only to US residents, but it might be worth checking into.  If there is a toll-free number to Apple where you live, you might want to give them a call.

As for when to buy?  Buy when you absolutely need one.  If you can afford to wait, do so.

    Read my tip:

    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-2294

If you buy an iMac now, you may still be able to get one that boots into 10.6 using the system specific discs that shipped with its point of manufacturer by calling AppleCare.  If you wait until it is new again, not only won't you get 10.6 compatibility, you won't get Rosetta and PowerPC application compatibility.   Only wait to buy new, if you know all your applications support the current operating system that ships with the new Mac. See what you get with 10.6 compatibility:

    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-2455

and what you need for 10.7 compatibility:

    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-2465

And decide is it worth the risk?   Or do you want to buy a used or refurbished Mac to ensure compatibility, but improve your current compatibility that does support 10.6.8 and older?  Note, this is not prognostication, since all Macs have always once they are either refreshed or come with a hardware update, are limited to the operating system shipping new at the time of their refresh/hardware update

There will always be something new around the corner when it comes to computers. I decided to buy now instead of waiting for what might be. The current generation more than meets my needs and $999 for a refurbished 21.5" iMac (Mid 2011) is pretty hard to beat.

That said, you're a student, so there are a few questions you might want to ask yourself:

Does your current machine meet your needs for today?

There is usually a 'back to school' promotion in late summer. Can you afford to wait for that? Never mind new hardware... it's a matter of simple economics...

If you need a machine today, just go for it. If you're afraid you'll regret it if something new comes out, then wait.
