Q: Importing from iPhoto to Aperture

Derrrr ...

When I import files from iPhoto to Aperture they appear only to transfer in JPEG format.  The images are all taken in RAW (DNG) and appear as RAW files in iPhoto; however, when imported they appear as JPEG files in Aperture.

Am I doing something stupid?

Thanks a million for advice.

Did you set in the Import Settings in the RAW+JPEG Pairs brick the "Import" selector to "Both(Raw as Master)" or have yo a different setting, like "Jpeg Files only"?

Where do I find that then?  Are these the import settings for Aperture?

In the Import Panel in Aperture - the panel that opens when you click the big blue down arrow in the toolbar of the main Aperture window.

    See this screenshot:

    Importsettings.png

    • In the top selector "import settings" make sure that Raw+JPeg PAirs is selected.
    • Check the file Types selector that nothing important is excluded
    • Set RAW+JPEG to Import: Both + the master you want

Forget the above post, after testing again I noticed that the Raw+Jpeg Setting in the iPhoto Library Import Panel does not change, even if you modify the import settings in the Import panel. So probably my memory is faulty or changing the import settings in the import panel does no longer effect the import settings for the iPhoto import.

But how did you import from iPhoto? If you drag from the iPhoto Browser, you will always only import jpegs, because from the iPhoto Browser you only import the iPhoto Previews.

To get raw+jpeg you need to use the iPhoto Library Import:

File -> Import -> iPhoto Library

and that should import RAW+JPEG as separate masters, but will import the complete iPhoto Library.

If you only want a few images, your best option would be

    • to export your images from iPhoto to the disk and then to import into Aperture using the Import Panel I have shown above
    • or to simply import the complete library (if feasable) and to delete afterwards what you do not want.

Sorry for the confusion above , but I hope now it is clearer.

    Thanks Leonie

That's got it!  You're right: the import settings options only appear when using iPhoto Library Import; it must be a default setting when opening iPhoto and dragging and dropping into Aperture that files transfer as 'view files' in JPEG format only.

    Rather than:

File -> Import -> iPhoto Library

    use:

File -> Import -> Open iPhoto Browser

you can then select which images to import.

I tend to use iPhoto as my first point of culling images, so that the only images I have in Aperture have already passed an initial selection process prior to adjustment.

    All the best

    Paul

Q: Is there a way to have the selected images from IPhote to be automatically deleted after they are imported?

Although the OP questionsSolved...I do the same as

And it would be nice to have them automatically deleted.
