Q: eMac usb 2.0 can't update safari.
Helping a friend with an;
eMac usb 2.0 running 10.3.9
1GHz
1GB
Boot ROM - 4.8.2f1
He had a hard time accessing certain websites, which now that I'm caught up on info about eMacs might due to them no longer being supported by the latest flash and java.
The first thing I noticed when he brough it to me is that safari was no longer installed, he tried to update it, ended up trashing it.
I tried running the software update to see if it would reinstall that way, no dice.
Ended up on oldapps.com and tried reinstalling safari 1.3.2, which I think is that latest version this version of OS X will support. No dice here either, so I ended up going back all the way to safari 1.2(v125), which is the only install that actually worked, initially tried going back to 1.0. The problem is now I can't update this version any further, running software update never finds any updates available and trying any other versions from old apps doesn't work.
Any ideas?
While fiddling with this problem I thought it might just be easier to upgrade to the latest version OS this mac can handle which someone told me is 10.5.6 which I got a hold of but when trying to install crashes and prompts me to restart. (Had to replace the CD ROM with a spare drive DVD drive to be able to use it)
With this on the screen.

Don't have the original discs, currently looking to get a hold of a retail version of the original OS.
I have on hand a copy of 10.5.2 disc version 1.1 but it's from a Macbook. Would this be useful?

That eMac is a special edition for certain educational customers that used the faster USB 2.0 logic board but with a 1.0Ghz processor instead fof the 1.25G processor of the first-issue "standard" USB 2.0 eMacs. Unfortunately, that also means the logic board could be from a group known to be defective. If it has one of the bad LBs, that could cause kernel panics that may not be economically feasible to repair.
So let's check his serial number agaisnt the list of affected eMacs:
- G8412xxxxxx- G8520xxxxxx
- YM412xxxxxx - YM520xxxxxx
- VM440xxxxxx - VM516xxxxxx
Don't post his serial number--just let us know if it falls within one of the above ranges.
If the computer won't run long enough to get the serial number from "About this Mac" or with System Profiler (the "More Info..." button in the "About this Mac" results window) yo ucan find it on a sticker inside teh optical drive door:
It will help to know if this unit is among the "suspected" before attempting further troubleshooting, as the LB problems is, for most people, not something that can be fixed without professional help. A replacement logic board, if you can find one that is not affected by the defect, costs many times more than a used eMac is worth today.
