Version 10.6.1 no longer allows use of the space bar to start and stop the currently playing music. Also, the return key can no longer be used to strart a song. I find it very convenient to use the space bar to stop and start the music.

    Works fine here.

Must be an intermittent or temporary problem on our MacBook Pro. I tried the same on our iMac and it works fine. So, I quit and restarted iTunes on the MacBook Pro and now all is back to normal. Very strange!

You are correct Barbara133. The keys you described will not control your playback as long as the search field in the upper right corner is looking for input. To utilize these keys the search field must say "Search Music" in grey and not be outlined in blue. Pressing escape clears the typing but does not restore it to itunes start up mode. I wish I knew a way to turn off searching without restarting itunes as I continually use the space bar to pause playback. I am using OS 10.6.8 and itunes 10.5.3 on imac. It would be interesting to find out if this has been addressed in other releases.

Click on anything esle besides the Search field.

and if you click on any of the column headers and start typing, it will jump to what you are typing.

    Hello.

"This solved my question by Chris CA  on Mar 31, 2012 9:58 AM"...?

I am afriad I do not understand what that was, which solved your concern. In fact, I do not read a solution in any of the responses, which same problem brought me here.

I find 'space' to stop iTunes playing when iTunes is minimized, but not otherwise—for the reasons noted above—which default into the Search window is annoying. However, what more immediate [ two step ] solution I determined from the responses above is to press 'tab' & then 'space', which, when the window is full, terminates playing. I do not regard that to be a solution, but a work-a-round.

Tab sets the focus to another field as noted above.

You can type a space in the Search field so the space bar should not (and never has) start/stop a song when you are in the Search field.

    Hello, Chris.

    Thank you for your reply.

It seemed to me that the issue was that iTunes defaulted to the Search field when not minimized, which prevented the Space Bar from being able to automatically function as a means to stop a song from playing. & I understood that as the issue, which seems still to be unresolved.

Note: I do not know if iTunes had/has always defaulted to the Search field, as I never had cause to notice until I began to seek a solution to the problem [ bug ]—subsequent to recent updates—which caused the Space Bar to no longer function as a consistent means to stop playing.

Perhaps, I am still misunderstanding something, but, again, the problem seems to be illogical that a non-minimized window in iTunes should disable the Space Bar from functioning properly as a keyboard shortcut. That is the solution I continue to search for.

It is not disabling anything. Space bar is used as a space or as a keybord shortcut depending on where the cursor is.

It cannot be a keyboard shorcut when the cursor is in the Search field. It has always been this way.

Works same way in the Finder.

Open a Finder window and put the cursor in the Search field at top right then press the Space bar. It adds a space.

Now select any file in the Finder window a file and press the Space bar. It shows the file in QuickLook.

But I am not debating that, nor am I querying why the Space Bar won't stop playing a song when the cursor is in the Search window.

What I am querying is whether iTunes has always/must open to a full window with the cursor IN THE SEARCH FIELD?

If that is not an ineludable default, which condition prevents the Space Bar from functioning to stop a song without preliminary steps [e.g, hitting the Tab button], then it is a fault/bug particular to Apple's updates to iTunes. & all I have been querying about is how to solve that fault, if it is one.

It's sad that readers cannot understand your clear, accurate issue.  Prior to iTunes 10.6, the default was for the Find field to *not* be active, so pressing the space bar started and stopped playback.  In iTunes 10.6, the Find field is *always* active, so the space bar no longer works as a keyboard shortcut.  This is a new bug, plain and simple.  It is not a "feature" to have the Find field constantly active.

I jumped from iTunes 10.2.2 to 10.6, so I cannot say if it was introduced between these two versions.

Readers understand exactly what the issue is.

Sounds like you did not even read Qelipot's post (which you responded to).

In iTunes 10.6, the Find field is *always* active, so the space bar no longer works as a keyboard shortcut.

Yes it does work fine as a keyboard shortcut for me and also for Qelipot (whom you responded to) and barbara133 and millions of others.

You first need to move the cursor from the Search field.

As with all previous versions of iTunes, the Space bar does not start/stop a song when the cursor is in the Search field. (as previously explained as as Qelipot acknlowledged).

iTunes 10.6.x opens with the cursor in the Search field, where previous versions did not.

Actually Chris CA I think you may have misunderstood Qelipot's posts - not suggesting that is anyone's fault or trying to nitpick! I simply have the same issue as Qelipot and still have no solution to my issues here..

The spacebar will not perform it's usual play/pause function. No matter where I click/what is highlighted/how many times I press tab (once twice three times you can fill in the rest) the spacebar seems to only place an extra space in the Search field.

I can only assume it is a bug that is causing this issue but with Level 9 and 61,000 points to your name it would be great if you have a solution (not workaround) to this issue. If not I'd appreciate a response regardless so I know whether or not to contact apple regarding this issue.

Thanks very much for you time!

Clearly this Level and Point system is based on the quantity, not quality, of responses.  Qelipot, you, and I were all quite clear.  iTunes contains a bug.  Chris CA's statements have done nothing but confuse the issue and turn people away from seeking solutions here.

I wish there was any reason to believe that an actual iTunes developer could be made aware of this issue.
