Q: Apple TV homesharing keeps dropping out ...

The homesharing on my Apple TV keeps dropping off randomly.
I have a mac with wired ethernet access, and the Apple TV uses my wifi connection.
The setup was OK, and YouTube and NetFlix are fine, but the homesharing will drop off at random times (I see the message "activate homesharing on itunes" under the Computers menu option). My mac is set to never sleep, and itunes is running continuously, so I know that isn't the problem. Wifi signal strength is 80% in the Apple TV menu.
Can anyone help ?

Mac, Mac OS X (10.6.7)

Try to assign a static IP address to your AppleTV and all units connected to homeshare.

I had the same problem as you but since I assigned static IP address everything works fine.

So now I have done that with all my units

In my router the DHCP range is set between 10.0.0.2 to 10.0.0.29 and I have assigned 10.0.0.30 to 10.0.0.45 to all my units.

That way you will never have any conflicts.

Since I did that nothing has ever lost connection.

I use an Airport Extreme on my cable modem.

    Hope it helps.

I'm having the same problems too. APTV only drops out when home sharing with my laptop running iTunes, I can play music directly from iPhone or iPad and it doesn't drop out, watch netflix, catch up tv streamed from my iPad or iPhone and no problems too.

I also have to reset my router when the airplay button is not present on my devices which is really annoying.

Come on Apple, sort this out, it's ruining a great product!

I have exactly the same problems since the APTV update and only can resolve it using ethernet cable from the router to the Mac. I have posted a query to resolve the wifi in another thread.

    if using the apple remote

make sure your in Apple itv > your itunes homeshare rather then being in Your itunes homeshare > then being accessed to the apple itv, as i just got my apple itv today, and it kept dropping out, so i found i had go back and open the apple itv and not the itunes homeshare

Wow, I was just posting in another thread about this that I discovered exactly the opposite behavior: in Apple Remote app > AppleTV > iTunes library > streaming music > AppleTV allows computer to sleep, stopping streaming abruptly.

In Apple Remote app > iTunes library > AirPlay to AppleTV > streaming music > properly keeps Mac awake and doesn't cutout mid-song.

What would happen if you put your energy saver of your iMac/MBP to Computer sleep "never"?  Guess there might be default computer sleep timer putting the Mac machine into sleep that interrupted the streaming.

If you never let your Mac go to sleep it would: a) use more electricity b) your electricity bill would increase slightly and c) certain parts might wear out faster (HDD, fans, power supply, etc.).

I've had this happening since the latest Apple TV update. It never happened before that.  Homesharing just drops out at random intervals. The only way I can get it back is to close out iTunes and then start it back up.  Very annoying. Another new bug since the new update is that if I try to use shuffle mode when listening to my music, about third or fourth song will quit about halway through and it advances to the next song. At first I thought the shuffle thing was an iTunes Match problem, but then discovered it also happens in Homesharing.

I tried your method dkclaus, but I am still losing home sharing after a few minutes.

i opened all those ports manually except 80 which was already open for http, and no joy.

Still homesharing cuts out after a few mins.  I even decreased my pnp advertising to 2 mins, and nothing new.

Appletv is going back to the store.

It is SOOOO frustrating when it doesn't work - have you tried to connect the AppleTV through ethernet cable to find out if it is only on wifi it looses homesharing?

I had the same problem. You need to open TCP port 3689 and UDP port 5353 on both your Router and Windows Firewall!! Did that and it's working fine now.

I have an apple network as well and i updated to ios 5 on my atv2. I watched a 2 hour move right before i updated today. Now I get 20 to 30 minutes of video and then it kicks me back to the main apple menu on the atv2. I only can see the shared library again after I disable and enable home sharing. Not cool apple, don't release updates until everything is tested.

Have to say i too have this problem with homesharing dropping out on me, i have apple TV ,Macbook Pro,Iphone 4 running latest Itunes... My router is a Buffalo Airstation that previous to AppleTV i had absolutely no problem with whatsoever apart from the homesharing between my Macbook Pro and my wifes Dell Laptop would randomly drop out in the same manner so im not convinced its the fault of AppleTv i think its more the sharing feature of Itunes, i spoke to Apple support and they suggested i might want to go buy one of there apple branded routers then things should work fine..... i get that apple products work well together ordinarily very well but this advice really wasnt helpful to me whatsoever, left me with rather a bad taste in my mouth really ... Apple must be one of the only retailers that hold you to ransom in such a way , beautiful products but underhand tactics really... judging by the amount of posts on this thread you would have thought there would be an easy workaround published by now or could it be that we all simply have to go out and buy a time capsule at £250.00 then?....

I read earlier in a thread on another forum that someone had gone instore to see a genius about this same issue and was told basicly the same ... buy an Apple Router Etc..... i may go to Apple and buy one and home trial it for 30 days see where that gets me i have nothing against buying the router to be honest i love apple products but i just want the darn things to work more universally.... ive read on this thread of people doing it on a wired connection so how the **** can it be the router anyway! i reckon its deliberatly set up to just work via a wireless connection as long as its an Apple wireless connection .... havnt seen much about people with Apple routers having their Homesharing dropping out or have i missed them does it still happen with Apple routers anyway??

    rant over
