Q: OS X Lion freezes at login screen + App Store is slow

I installed OS X Lion in my Mac Book Pro (Mid 2010) and have two issues:

- Login screen freezes sometimes. "Colored rotating disc" appears, text cursor stops blinking and I can not do anything; I can not click anywere, I can not enter my user name/password... Only option is to hard-reboot the computer, which is not a pleasant thing to do.

- App Store is very slow. It takes about 30 seconds of "rotating colored disc thinking" every time a page has to be loaded!

I first installed OS X Lion via Mac App Store and login screen freezes happened about 50% or more of the times I turned on the computer! Also random freezes happened during computer work. Computer was almost unusable under these circumstances, so I reinstalled OS X Lion by doing a clean install (from DVD). After this clean install everithing seemed to run smoothly at first, but now login screen freezes happen again and Mac App Store is very slow as I explained.

I did not have any of these problems with Snow Leopard. I have checked permissions, and I have not installed too many apps yet.

Anybody with these same issues? Any idea of a solution? Somebody at Apple working to solve these problems?

Thanks!

quantum_flux: I agree with troubleshooting your MBP in standalone mode - no mouse, keyboard or external display. I'd bet it will turn into the "spinning beachball at the login-prompt symptom" that a lot of us have experienced, in which case the kext-fix described above, for gliderjoe, is worth trying. But re-attaching the mouse and external display again may result in other symptoms.

    Thanks Max,

I haven't been too scintific about this but I have tried the kext-fix and the cache cleaner.  All good so far but I'm not holding my breath.  Thanks again.  I'll keep you posted.

    Cheers

I must retract my earlier statement. Intermittent freezes are happening at a greater frequency. Apple Service Diagnostic has passed on a 24-hour loop. Hardware is not the issue here. I, like many others, am greatly disappointed in the quality of this operating system. Seriously, where is the resolution from Apple? Where is the patch? They patched the wireless issue and one week later, the symptoms resurfaced. Disgust is the best I can describe my feelings at this point. Brand new iMac suffering from more issues than any Apple computer I've ever owned or worked on.

I'm going to install OSX Lion on a MacBook Pro 15" (Mid 1007), now running 10.6.8,  with a GeForce 8600M GT.  I'm hoping I won't get a BSOD.  Does anyone have any advice to share?    Thanks.

If I do have a problem, I hope Prasi's December 21, 2011 posting of "The Fix" will work for me as well (see the posting below).

    ___________________________________________________________________

    Foreword:

    I have a 15 inch Macbook Pro 6,2 (Mid 2010) with 256 MB Nvidia GeForce GT 330M.

After I did an upgrade to OSX Lion from Snow Leopard, I had this SBBoD.

I did a hard disk wipe out and finally made a clean install of OSX Lion. I didn't work. I still had the same problem.

    Finally I did the following:

THE FIX (It worked for me. But I am not sure whether this is any solution):

    1. Logged into OSX Lion

    2. Moved the following file into Trash:

    /System/Library/Extensions/AppleGraphicsPowerManagement.kext

    3. Did a Shutdown.

    4. Started in Safe Mode ( http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1455 )

    5. Logged into OSX Lion

    6. Did a Shutdown.

    7. Started in normal mode. Logged in.

    8. Put the file back from trash in to the same location " /System/Library/Extensions "

    9. Did a Shutdown.

    10. Started again in Safe Mode. Logged in.

    11. Did a Shutdown.

    12. Started in Normal mode. Logged in.

    Thats it !!!

For my Imac (3,06 GHz i3), 10.7.3 cure was disabling wi-fi, no SBBoD on login screen/ user switching. Hopefully situation remains, fingers crossed.

I posted I was having this issue a couple of months back.

I found the disable graphics switching worked for me so have been running like that since.

Then about 2 weeks ago, Apple support contacted me about the issue. I have just worked with them over the phone to take log data when the hang occurs.

Not a resolution but does appear that Apple engineering are actively looking and collecting data on the issue. When that resolution may come is anyones guess. I reckon they will work to resolve in both Mountain and Lion simultaneously so might take a bit longer.

    Hi

I bought my Macbook pro in Portugal and ther they have 2 years of waranty! Know i'm living in Switzerland and they gave me just one yearof warranty even showing the warranty document. Is this wright?

i have de same problem as you describe but they tested the logic board and all computer and told me they its everything ok, asked if is the operating system that i have (i downloaded it from app store 10.7 and 10.7.3) and or with the SSD that i have one corsair and one kingstone but tested with 1 Kingstone hyperx ssd, Corsair force GT, OCZ vertex 2 and Vertex 3 and another ocz chipest and with all modles i test it separeted and even with raid with my brother kingstone hyper x and still giving the same problem.

They told me that will see but i contact apple care and they do not gave me warraty becayse it has almost 2 years and in switzerland its one year but i bought it in Portugal...they told me to send to repaire in Portugal...so Apple Portugal it's not the same Apple in Spanin or another place in the world...right? European law gives 2 years warranty for all products...ok if i bought in europe i have those two years even if i repair ir in china ...i guess...

I have just updated to Lion on my Mac Book Pro (Mid 2010) and have had the same problem with it hanging on bootup just prior to the login screen, rebooting once or twice I could get the desktop where everything worked fine.

Disabling graphic switching solved my issue also. I see most of these posts are 2011 so I am surprised the issue is still hanging around. Perhaps I might take it to the Apple store and see if there is a hardware update.

Anyway thanks for posting the solution in the forum it got me past a very frustrating bug on a work machine which I can ill afford down time. I though I might be facing a clean install.

I've had similar issues -- the MBP purchased in November shipped with 10.7 (Apple had performed a firmware update that precluded it running Snow Leopard).

Multiple accounts are on the machine, but only one is mainly used (in Admin mode).   Boot up, select the account, log in manually and when the desktop is built, the Finder will beach ball.

I've flushed caches, reset the SMB, PRAM, deleted and recreated the account fresh, repaired permissions, ran external checks of the hard drive (Disk Warrior and Drive Genius), and still intermittently it occurs.    Deleted the Finder prefences, have Fast Switching off.  No improvement.  However, I believe it only happens if a USB device is attached at the time of boot.   I have witnessed it happening with the external TM drive or the iPhone 4S attached.   A forced shutdown (power key hold) and reboot invariably is successful.

Note that the SBOD only occurs after the login, during or at the end of the desktop build.   No other apps can launch but the mouse cursor will typcially move.  No response to keyboard (force-quit combo does nothing).

Very, very disappointed at a .3 release that Lion isn't more stable, but who knows, it may be the MBP firmware at fault.

For my mid-2010 15" MacBookPro6,2 (NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M 256MB) running on 10.7.3 with the client combo update, "The Fix" kext fix posted by UW Tech above (page 59) has worked for me for the past 10 days so far.  I've experienced no SBBoD, kernel panics/system crashes, or black screens from sleep wakeup.  This is after trying all of the other fixes in this thread.  In fact, my bootup time has also improved.  Will update if I experience any problems.

Am curious if any other users that have the same MacBookPro6,2 and are experiencing SBBOD or kernel panic/system crashes have tried the above fix and if so if it's worked for them as well.

The kext fix worked for me for 3 - 4 weeks so far on my mid-2010 15" mbp.

I had at least one BSOD per day. No BSOD so far...

I'm really surprised Apple cannot fix this.
