Q: iPhone stuck in "headphones" mode

Earlier I accidentally grabbed my iPod headphones instead of my iPhone headphones and I think I may have jammed them in there too far. Because now I can't hear any of the keyboard clicks or sounds and when I receive a text message there's no sound either. And when I receive a call it won't allow me to hear the person on the other line unless I put my headphones in or use the speaker function. And when I turn the ringer volume up/down it says "headphones" in parentheses as if it's been set to "headphones" mode or something! Is it possible that I jammed them in so far that my iPhone thinks my headphones are still plugged in? Did I just totally ruin my iPhone? What do I do? Anyone know how I can fix this? Thanks!

I bought a phone and got myself a humidity detector!

In my humble opinion, this exasperating problem is not effected by temperature, but is related to humidity.

Drying the phone, by blowing air in or out, cooling it, heating it, etc, alters the humidity inside the phone.  The dryer it is, the more likely it is to work correctly.

My phone was working fine yesterday - a warm sunny day of low humidity - yet right on cue, as the clouds rolled in over my mountain home this morning, the phone switched to headphone mode.  A visit to a nearby airconditioned store, and it was back in ringer mode.

I plan on buying some packs of Silica Gel Dessicant crystals and storing my phone with them overnight as a tempory measure to solve the problem but Apple desperately need to make a software change to decrease the sensitivity they have programmed into their headphone socket detection subroutine.

The slightest bit of moisture sets it off into headphone heaven.

    Hopefully, the next software update..........

    HI Guys,

Had this issue this morning and tried the headphone jack in and out, the vaccum cleaner, blowing and sucking, restore to factory etc etc.

Finally what worked was a long blast of canned air into the jack which also made it very cold.  So not sure if it is the air blast dislodging an object or the temperature thing but it worked.

Unplugging and then plugging the broken headphone jack in and out a bunch of time did it for me.   On my set, I also used screwing motion, clockwise, which seemed to help as well.

    Thanks!!!

I had this issue and I sympathize, it's quite frustrating. After reading these posts, I noticed some lint in the USB socket, used a toothpick to clear it and this solved the issue. I had been docking the phone in a Soundwave, so this may have pushed the lint up in there. Good luck fixing. iPhone 4s.

Bigbillpns,  this was the solution that worked for me after trying to plug in and unplug countless times.  Sucking and pressing the volume buttons is the way foraward although it took a couple of efforts.

    Thanks

I just sucked on my iPhone headphone jack just so I could listen to Rhianna.  It worked, but I feel so dirty...

My husband couldn't hear on his  iPhone original and volume showed earphones.  I tried plugging/unplugging the earphones several times and this didn't work.  I did look in the headphone slot and there appeared to be some lint - very hard to see - so I got a flashlight and then, with my older eyes a magnifying glass.  Tried gently using a toothpick and then a needle to get the lint out.  Got it the lint moved to the side. FINALLY!!!  I got the Dust Gun (compressurized air), and with the second squirt the lint came flying out!!  The iphone immediately returned to regular sound mode - no more showing earphones!  And a Happy Hubby again.

I've just had the exact same problem

    Tried unplugging the headphone jack

    Rebooting

    Nothing working at all

Nifty trick if you don't have a can of compressed air. Use a ball pin and a standard bike pump and use 3-4 bursts of air ,

Worked a treat iPhone 4 is totally back to normal

I have to agree with this post regarding humidity. It is one of several likely causes. It was quite humid today and this seemed to affect the device. Blowing with compressed air did not help at all. There was no liquid damage to the device.

This also happened to me after using my iPod headphones rather than the iPhone headphones. Inserting, then removing the headphones 8 times fixed the issue. It recurred immediately, then I inserted and removed a few more times and the issue went away. For good measure I cleaned the docking port and headphone port with compressed air again, and rebooted the device again (I had tried this earlier).

I tried inserting the headphones (iphone earbuds, Beats head phones, etc.) over 15 times and that didn't really work at all.

This is what worked for me:

-I had someone call me on my iphone and I put them on speaker phone.

-We talked for about 30 minutes

-Then I hung up with them still on speaker phone mode

-the phone went back to normal!

I think it might be a combination of moisture getting into the phone somehow, the earphone jack getting out of aligment or something and the software going crazy.

But after trying the earphone plugging and unplugging, re-setting the phone and trying to blow air through the phone to clean out any lint/debris, having someone call me and talking is what finally did the trick.

    Good luck everyone.

So glad I kept reading this discussion board.  I had this problem today and tried plugging/unplugging the headphones, blowing/sucking, restarting the phone, etc.; nothing worked.  Finally saw your post about sticking in a piece of rolled up paper and it fixed the problem immediately.  Thanks!

I have had the exact same problem following a drink that was knocked over, I thought it had only caught the front of my phone but clearly not as when I tried to make a call I couldn't hear anything only to discover it was stuck on 'headphone' instead of 'ringer'. I spent hours trying the tricks suggested on here - cotton bud, headphones in & out several times, rebooting - no change. Finally I read that someone had sucked the jack but it didn't work for them but thought I may aswell give it a go & hey presto the ringer is back on!!

    Problem:

iPhone music sound could not be heard through iPhone's speaker after removal from an ihome dock. iPhone thought it was still connected to the dock. Plugging in headphones allowed me to hear music playing. Unplugging the headphones put the iPhone external sound source back into connected dock.

What didn't work to fix the problem:

Blowing out headphone jack or removing and reinserting headphone connector.

What did work to fix the problem:

Placed the iPhone back into the ihome dock. Played music through ihome to make sure it worked. Powered down the ihome, waited for the iPhone screen to go blank. Removed iPhone from the dock and hit the play button on the song that had been playing through the ihome dock. Now it works.
