".I feel for this i should be able to get it fixed for a lower or free price. Can this be arranged?"
Of course not. You broke it. Like any warranty on any product, damage is not covered.
Here are the repair prices for ipod:
FYI, you are not communicating with Apple when you post here. Everyone here is just a fellow user and can do nothing about Apple's service policies and pricing.
You can try taking your iPod to an Apple Store and pleading your case. Getting them to replace the iPod without charge is unlikely - dropping it is dropping it, and that it broke from only a "one-foot drop" is unfortunate but just bad luck - but you can try.
thanks for your help! Thank you for the advice!

+Can you please answer this too i will give you 10 points. If I spend five dollars on the inside of an app when the apple company repairs my ipod and i get it back will the five dollars worh of upgrades still be there??
The Apple Store will not repair your iPod, they'll replace it. So none of your apps nor data will be on the replacement iPod. You may be able to re-download your In-App purchases, though not all are eligible. See:
As to the points, you've already marked your own post as being the one that solved your question (sort of impolite to those who try to help you) and marked two others as "helpful", so you have no other points to award. Not that I myself care, but just FYI for the future.
Dude, the thing that broke is GLASS for cryin' out loud! What do you expect?
The cheapest way to take care of this is to fix it your self, but doing so will VOID ANY REMAINING WARRANTY.
A replacement digitizer can be had for under $20.00, most vendors include the special tools, and there are even multi-media "How-To" guides on the Internet. eBay and Google are your friends.....
