I have an Intel Core 2 Duo 3.06 GHz Imac and I am running Snow Leoprad 10.6.8. The problem I am having is that since I recently uipdated Safari, I cannot run Youtube videos. Every time I try watching one, the page crashes. I know I am not alone here and I am surprised Apple has not approached this situation yet. I have tried running youtube videos on Firefox and have had no problems doing so, thus I figure it must be Safari. I've tried running safari in 32 bit mode and that has not helped. I have emptied the cache and reset Safari as well but still no go. Any suggestions would be wonderful.

    Hi ..

    Quit Safari.

Uninstall the Flash plugin then reinstall new >  Troubleshoot Flash Player | Mac OS

Launch Safari From your Safari menu bar click Safari > Empty Cache

    Now try a video.

BTW... if you have the ClickToFlash extension installed, that can prevent Flash based video from streaming. It can also be installed as a plugin in /Library/Internet-Plug-Ins.

And check to see if Safari is running in 32 bit mode. Right or control click the Safari icon in your Applications folder then click Get Info. If the box next to:  Open in 32 bit mode  is selected, deselect, quit then relaunch Safari.

I know I am not alone here and I am surprised Apple has not approached this situation yet

Flash is written by Adobe. Just so you are aware, Apple is not responsible for compatiblity issues with third party software.

Thanks for the quick response Carolyn but unfortunately it did not resolve the issue I'm having. You say it is not Apple yet both Google Chrome and Firefox work fine, which leads me to believe there is a problem with Safari (a first party application). I have reinstalled Flash twice, emptied the cache, and then i also reset Safari. I have been reading up on the forums and noticed there are quite a few people having the same or similar issues. Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again.

I am having the exact same problem!!!

Running OS 10.7.3 on my brand new iMac.  When Safari updated to 5.1.5 the other day, I noticed the issue.  I didn't notice it before.  I don't run any extensions and it still is the same result.  I tired the obvious (empty cache, clear out cookies, reinstall flash, checked to see if it installed properly, etc etc) to no avail.  Tried all the suggestions here... no change.  It works in Firefox and other browsers... just Safari seems to be affected.  It's obviously a bug with Safari, but it is very frustrating nonetheless.  I'm sure there will be another update in the next few days so I guess we just need to be patient.  I know Apple isn't responsible for third party software... but... come on.  How are you supposed to watch video on the web without it?  Everyone uses it-- why wouldn't they make Safari compatible with it?

Ok, I even tried this HTML5 extension for Safari and it still isn't working.

As a matter of fact I'm having problems all over the place in Safari... pages loading slow, text is distorted in places, even this very page is buggy and crashed twice on me.

I am having the same problem, using Lion here.  Both firefox and chrome are fine, but safari choks on youtube.  They really need to fix this.

Same here. Running Safari 5.1.5 (newest version) on OSX 10.7.3 (newest version) op newest top-spec iMac i7 and suddenly YouTube gets stuck. Reinstalled Flash 11.2.202.228 (newest version) and cleared Safari cache with no avail.

Strangely enough, this doesn't happen on my late 2008 MBP with same software versions.

Hope a fix comes in soon.

    I'm having the same problem.

    Late 2009 iMac

    10.7.3

    Safari 5.1.5

YouTube skips and jumps like a broken old vynal record.

I dont think this problem occurred before I updated safari.

    It works fine on Chrome.

Hope this all gets sorted soon.

I notice the wonderer says its working fine on Firefox. I haven't tested it myself so I don't know.

My point is that safari and Firefox both use the flash installer supplied by adobe. If its working under Firefox fine, then that would add weight to the problem being on Apple's side of the fence.

Try a safe-boot and see what happens (though audio probably won't work if vids play).

Same issue here after upgrading to 5.1.5. Youtube plays fine in Firefox and Opera but in Safari audio skips and stutters, barely loads video and eventually a spinning beachball.

No issues with my connection and have tried the above suggestions to no avail. I have also tried both logged in and out of my Youtube account. No change.

    Mac Pro early 2008 3.2GHz

    OSX Lion

    Safari 5.1.5

Ok, I'll stop blaming flash and either blame Apple or YouTube...

I went to http://www.youtube.com/html5 and found that I was part of the HTML5 trial for YouTube and that YouTube videos should be playing via HTML5 and not Flash.

I left the HTML5 trial so that the video were being played by nasty old Flash... Guess what, it works.

Videos are now playing normally using Flash.

My suggestion is go to http://www.youtube.com/html5 and see if you are part of the HTML5 trial also, if you are, leave the trial and see how you go.

I thought I was the only one that was experiencing this problem. My dinosaur Pentium 4 Windows PC at my office streams YouTube faster than my MacBook Air (on Lion), with zero buffering lag. I have a 100mbs fiber optic link at home. Although I've been experiencing similar streaming problems with YouTube on iOS 5. The buffering is so 2005. Come on, Apple, you're all about user experience, or is Google throttling users on iOS and Safari? HTML5 in Lion *****, so I don't even go there.

    @leejbarker32

Yeah, I tried this too.  No effect.  Leaving the trial has no effect, being part of the trial has no effect.  I too wondered if this might be causing the problem so I went in to take a look to see if I was or was not in the trial for HTML5 on youtube.  As it turns out, I WAS NOT in the trial... so I wondered if maybe I should be and the problems would stop... nope!  On or off I (and now I know I am definitely not alone) it still doesn't work.  This seems to be a Safari bug, and I love using Safari, so don't get me wrong.  Then again, YouTube could have done something random too, I don't know.  Hulu is working fine, and doesn't that use Flash too?  Well, Once I installed this extension it seems to have fixed the problem:

I now have YouTube back... it streams great, and is even faster than it was before.

Sorry it didn't work for you.

I hadn't heard of the extension before. Have to say that I love it and think it's beautiful!!
