Q: MacBook Pro won't read Sandisk SDHC cards since Lion 10.7.1 update

Hi all, just wondering if anyone else has had this problem. I know there are dozens of posts about SD cards not working with MacBook pros, but mine seems to have started when I installed the latest Lion update.

I have a high-end 13" early 2011 MBP and the cards I'm having trouble with are all Sandisk 4GB SDHC. Two are 'Extreme III's" and one is an Extreme II. The card reader is showing up in System Profiler, and a really old 2GB Sandisk card gets read fine, so there doesn't seem to be anything wrong with the MBP hardware.

Similarly, I can read the cards fine via a USB adapter, so it's not the cards that are causing the problem.

I had successfully imported photos from the cards before upgrading to Lion, and also before installing the 10.7.1 update. So, it looks like the problem may be linked with the update, but this is purely an educated guess.

I've tried resetting the SMC to no avail.

Has anyone else experienced something like this?

I also got a similar problem, though my SD cards were being read even after upgrade to OS X Lion. Only a few weeks past that it started to not recognize the cards. What I did was to clean it using a can of air and it is okay now.

I am using MacBook Pro as well and Lion but in my Utilities folder, I dont have a file named XQuartz?  Why are some seeing this and yet I am not?

Yet this seems to be the fix for many.....all I have in Utilities would be an x11.app  + XSKey Updater.app but certaiy no XQuartz. How can some of us have it and others dont?

    I have a MBP from 2010.

Any ideas as to why I wouldnt have this XQuartz.app ????

    TIA

Okkkkk so my understanding from Suprithas original post, which many afterward said had worked for them, was that it needed to be updated, at which point the cards would'l work??

"I had the same problem.. My MBP did not recognise my SDHC card after installing lion. It worked after installing an update. Goto Applications --> Utilities --> XQuartz and mac automatically asks for an update installation. Download and install the update. Your memory card slot should work fine now."

When I clicked on the X11, it didnt ask for an update. However, there was a Lion update yesterday which i had put off and did afterwards hoping this issue might be addressed, but it wasnt, as i still cannot read the card.

Therefore, how am I to update X11?

    TIA

X11 is oooollldddd (eighties). You don't need it. Used for some old Unix things, and old window treatments.

If you have it, it is in the Applications/Utilities folder.

    Hi J,

You can try an SMC Reset: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964, but if that doesn't help, for now, you might want to just get a USB card reader.

As with Shelagh - I have installed all the updates available on Software Update and launched X11 and was not prompted to update it.

I am not sure that dust is effecting my machine as I can not see how Lion is more effected by dust that Snow Leopard. Same with the logic board really - I can not see how Lion is more effected than Snow Leopard. I may be wrong.

Does anyone know how to report this to Apple? I have seen numerous people ask this but the question always seems to be ignored.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

@Shelagh - There is an option to check for updates in XQuartz but I couldn't find that in X11. Did you try re-installing X11?  There is a download file available on this link - http://xquartz.macosforge.org/trac/wiki/X112.3.2.1 or you could install XQuartz and run an update. You can download XQuartz from here - http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/26593/xquartz

    I hope this helps.

This is a fix for an SD card that won't mount on the MacBook pro SD card reader.

Install the card fully, wait, then remove the card. Wait 20 seconds and then put the card back in 3/4 of the way. The card should mount after a few moments. See:

I was having the same issue with my 32gig SanDisk SDHC card. When I put it in my camera (Canon Rebel XS) it would not format because it was not readable. Same thing in my macbook pro mid 2010 13inch.

I have found a solution thats a little more technical than the "Don't push it in so far" technique.

If you leave it in long enough it will pop up a window that says, "This device is not compatible with this computer." It does take a while so plug it in and wait it out. Mine took about 15-20 min to finally pop up the window. Once that window appears click the initialize button and it will take you to the DISK UTILITY

window. On the left side it will show your MacHD and under it will be the SDHC card. Click on it then click on the ERASE tab. Go to where it says FORMAT: and set it to MS-DOS.....Name your Memory Card what ever you want and hit ERASE

A new device will appear on the left side with your Mac HD and Mac SD card reader

BOOM! ITS FIXED! You can now exit out of the DISK UTILITY go to FINDER and your card will now format in your camera and appear in your "MyDevices" window.

    Hope this helps SOMEONE~

Sounds like a great fix, but XQuartz is not in my Utilities folder and a Spotlight search doesn't show it anywhere.

It is called X11 in your Utilities folder.
