Hi all,

I'm the proud owner of a new iPad. One of the websites that I visit regularly allows users to "download linked file"

I can do this perfectly happily on my desktop PC with MS Internet Explorer, but I just can't see how to do this with iOS and Safari.

Can anyone enlighten me, please?

Thanking you, in advance.

Safari on the iPad has very limited downloading capability e.g. PDFs. What are you trying to download, and does the app that you want to download the file to (all files on the iPad have to be associated/stored with an app) have it's own browser/download option ?

iPad is a closed operating system, so unlike a PC, one does not download anything from the internet to be stored on an iOS (iPad/iPhone) device.  If the content you are trying to "view" is flash related, you won't have success in Safari.  There are Apps in the App store like iSwifter or Puffin, which work with some limited success.  Otherwise, you could download the content on your PC, and sync it to your iPad, or if it's text, you could save it on your computer and email it to yourself.

It depends on how the link is structured, but basically any PDF or typical MS Office document will actually open in the browser (assuming Safari here), and can be viewed. From there, if you tap on the document, you will have controls that allow you to save the document assuming you have an app installed that can handle that, such as good reader (PDFs can go to iBooks).

Some other browsers may behave a little differently.

Many thanks to those who have replied to my query.

What I should have mentioned is that the files whic I was trying to access/download are in MP4 format and will play on the iPad.

Again, my thanks for any help which you may be able to offer.

Go to the App Store and try this App:  http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/downloads-for-ipad-download/id380641055?mt=8

I have absolutely no experience with it, but a google search led me to this and it may do what you are trying to do.

In that case, you may need an app for playing music files other than the standard music app. I know there are some specifically geared to downloading music files, but have no firsthand experience with them.
