Q: OSX Lion + 2011 iMac 27'' + Video = Freeze

Hello.

Got a brand new 27'' iMac, installed Lion. The machine freezes randomly when starting to play videos, either on Youtube, Quicktime, iTunes.

When it freezes, the mouse still works, but the machine doesn't respond to any command, requiring me to hit the power button and restart the computer.

Searched on kernel.log and system.log, and found no crash/error/message.

Anyone suffering from the same problem? The machine is pretty solid, been running some OpenCL kernels too and they are ok. It's only video decoding (possible on the GPU) that seems to freeze randomly.

iMac, Mac OS X (10.7)

I just want to say briefly: RIGHT ON!!! If anything, this will get Apple's notice, if for no other reason than it will get the notice of many other people out there. It's a way to take the problem out of this limited forum and make it public on a large scale -- a problem that seems right now to be being swept under the rug and ignored.

I've tried something that seems to be working. This thread is long so apologies if this was posted before and not a real solution.

I went through my Applications folder and deleted all the Applications that were rendered useless by Lion, such as old versions of Microsoft Office and Creative Suite. You can sort by date and see which ones are obselete because their icons are crossed out. I did this yesterday afternoon and have not been seeing freezing since.

Just watched and uploaded a bunch of videos to Vimeo for the grandparents. Hope this might actually help some people. Good luck.

I'm going to the genius bar for the second time this Saturday... and I'm planing to video record when my iMac crashes and show them all this threat cause is absolutely ridiculous.... I've tried everything:

    1. Constantly repair permissions

    2. Tried the PRM or what ever it's called

    3. Use only ethernet and disable the wifi

    4. Change the screen resolution (that seems to help out a lil bit but hey I paid for the highest resolution why should I limit myself?)
    5. Install only the required applications

    6. Fresh Lion installation

    7. Not having anything else hook up to the system (such external HD, etc etc)

So obvsly this is ridiculous... My son is using my old 2009 macbook pro (the first generation of unibody systems) with LION installed and it works JUST FINE... and while he uses mostly flash based pages (cartoon network, nick jr, etc etc) he doesn't have any problem at all... and I can be working on Lightroom and photoshop and randomly the system crashes....

So I'll keep you posted and let you guys know cause seems that I should get some hardware replaced for sure....

I've been suffering ever since I upgraded to Lion. I did a fresh install of Lion and restotered my apps only to experience the freezing and crashing again that same day. I thought I would down grade to Snow Leopard but it looks like a complicted process. I ended up doing a new fresh install and not restoring my apps (with the exception of VirtualBox which I need to access Win7) and the iMac ran for a week without freezing. I then installed iWork and no freezing. I have since installed Skype and it is working fine. I'm still not clear on what was causing the problem but I do believe my HP printing/scanning software was one of the problems. The only challange is that I can't print or scan and both are basic business functions I perform every day. What's interesting is that I have since installed the HP printing/scanning software on my Mac Mini (running Lion) and it works just fine.

I did try using sleep mode as that was suggested by someone in this thread (I think this was intended to help control the temp.). It did not work for me and the computer hung up almost everytime it went to sleep forcing be to hold the power button and restart the machine. Leaving the machine on works just fine.

From my experience, this looks like a software bug(s).

BTW, I can now play video or audio from my iTunes library without skipping and freezing. This was the best way to prove the problem as I was not able to listen to a single song without a skip or freeze until now.

I'm starting my second week crash free (knock on wood) and I have a busy week planned so I hope my problem is behind me.

I've had this problem for a long time now - ever since the upgrade to Lion. I've tried all sorts of things.

Until recently my iMac was crashing every day.

Now it's been up for four days with no freeze or crash - this is something of a record.

What did it for me was disabling hardware acceleration for flash.

Just to keep this thread bubbling along my iMac is now freezing more than ever. Usually every hour or so.  Call me silly but I'm just desperate for the new iMacs to be released so I can upgrade and hopefully fix these issues with a brand new sparkling machine.

Just a quick post before I crash out of here but this is what I've just caught on my iPhone and is usually an early warning signal to a crash.

Safari seems to copy parts of the rest of the screen into small blocks that don't move on the screen but the content inside the block scrolls along.

I updated Java and also still have the freezing/black screens on multiple monitors/sound still running issue.

Running smcFanControl has really helped reduced it to a few times a week.

I Bootcamped to Windows yesterday and started up Fallout 3. Within 3 mins my machine went down and was as hot as an iron. Roughly where the gpu is.

I have not fallen for the new logic board + new screen + new hard drive + new graphics card + new ram + new inverter, that Apple has suggested for my out of warrenty machine.

It seems Apple tech's are either not acknowledging this embarrassing and expensive problem, as months down the line its still a big mystery and each time, it's the first time that they've heard of it.

I also feel that this forum as its going is not really going to get any notice from Apple to spend a mass of money on a solution (people may find their own solution here though and share it).

Is there another direction that we can come against this brick wall.

I have more than one 27" iMac and had my friend contact my local Apple store, that I've had a load of dealings with. He explained to people, that I have dealt before, with that he was having these problems (he in fact wasn't). Strangely enough, the same people were hearing this problem for the first time and suggested a logic board change. So I've lost faith now.

Hoping that posting will make this thread bigger and more likely to appear on Apple's radar.

I have a friend that manages a computer lab at a college that has ~40 21" iMacs all running OSX 10.6.8. He has never heard or experienced a problem with an iMac freezing. This lab is used for training web, video, and animation developers.

Is there anybody in this thread that has experiencing the problem on a 21" iMac?

    My iMac is as follows;

    27-inch, Late 2009

Processor  2.66 GHz Intel Core i5

    Memory  8 GB 1067 MHz DDR3

    Graphics  ATI Radeon HD 4850 512 M

    Software  Mac OS X Lion 10.7.3 (11D50)

After doing a fresh install and not installing my HP printing/scanning software I was about to run for a week and a half with out a crash/freeze. Then yesterday I started to experence very brief pauses where it was difficult to type in a text document. From my experience, this will progressivly get worse until I reinstall Lion.
