Q: Is anyone else receiving LinkedIn spam messages?

I received a spam e-mail from a person with a yahoo account with the subject titled, "Are your parents English?" he asked her, one morning," and the message was also "cc" to a bunch of accounts all having the begninning parts of my e-mail address. Anyone had one of these yet?

I am not connected to Linkedin. I'm not on Facebook, don't use ichat, and I don't use this e-mail as often as I do G-mail yet, I've been receiving the same spams as others since the very beginning of this discussion group. Yesterday, I started recieving Habbo Hotel as well. I'm also receiving spam from Montblanc.com.

MadMacsO--you mentioned SpamCop? Is that a way to stop this from happening? Or, should I click on the messages (without opening anything) to move them from my junk folder into the trash folder?

I wonder if I just leave spam in my junk folder unopened will Apple see the spam and be able to stop it from their end?

P.S. This is all happening on my .mac account.

I am still wondering about those Habbo Hotel messages saying so-and-so has sent me a message.  I have never visited Habbo but the emails are being sent to my Mail address and aliases.  Is it possible .mac accounts have been hacked? 

I never go to LinkedIn.  I think that one gets hacked a lot.

I had never heard of Habbo until today. My .mac account has recently garnered a lot of spam compared to the past. Here's what an internet search found for Habbo: http://stopmalvertising.com/tag/habbo-hotel.html  I don't know if .mac accounts have been hacked per se.. but the bots have certainly found us..

same situation with me. Never shared with anyone, but here lately, the random spam emails keep coming.  Only the .mac and not the .me. Could be aol got hacked at some point.  You can set up a .me for use with iChat, however too.  I would be curious to know if anyone has seen this on their .me account.

I don't use iChat, or anything related to aol, but have received these spam as well.

I've been using SpamCop for years with mixed results. They seem to be pretty good at shutting down the amature spammers, but the commercial ones seem to go on for a long time, so I think they are making a dent in the problem, but hardly an panacea. It takes a few minutes to set up an account and figure out the best way to submit what they need depending on the e-mail client you use (they need to be able to read all of the header as well as the body of the message). Something new I've noticed is that they usually automatically send a copy to Apple as an insterested third party, so it would appear that Apple has taken a real interest in controlling it better.

I doubt seriously that they would as they already have plenty of samples submitted to them every day to work on.

I've now just received an e-mail that says:

          "Hey there--Just a heads up that Tina Murphy has approved your friend request on foursquare. View their profile (they have a link for me to click). Have fun--your friends at foursquare."

I've never heard of foursquare. I don't have a friend Tina M. and I didn't make a friend request. Is it just another part of this Linkedin spam and no big worry? (I didn't click the link just in case)

And, is it possible be a friend to someone you don't know because they approve a request you didn't make? Should I be concerned about my address book or my name/e-mail being compromised?

I got a couple of the FourSquare emails too.  Never been there, never heard of them.  I just deleted them.

I'm assuming they are actually the same group, but they change their name regularly to avoid junk filtering.

I've seen one of these in the past 2-3 days. Looked very similar to the LinkedIn ones from before so I sent it right off to spamville. It was using a forged FourSquare address, if I recall correctly and clicking on it would have sent you someplace else.

Thanks for the post with the e-mail to report to Linkedin on spam mails.  I've received several e-mails too from Linkedin, but have no account with them.  I keep all my stuff private so I don't know how they received my e-mail to spam.  Also, this is not only a mac e-mail issue, I've gotten these with my normal service provider e-mail.  It has to be something else now.  Hope they find the problem & fix  it soon.  I'm glad I stumbled on this forum chat while looking on line to see if there was an issue.  Thank you again.

Not long ago Yahoo was hacked for 400K passwords, which led further to AOL, gMail, Sony, & Linkedin being hacked, probably not ending there...

I keep getting LindedIn e-mails to my gmail account. They go straight to my junk folder - always have. But when I get three a day, it's getting ridiculous. Clearing our spam once a week by emptying the folder removes about 15 - 20 LinkedIn mails each time. I never used to look through my spam folder, but sometimes legit people have mailed me and for some reason Google has sent it to Spam. Now when I check it just in case, it's mostly LinkedIn and Chinese medicine spam. *sigh*

Are you sure you aren't seeing some of the same messages day after day (check the date)? Gmail behaves differently from most accounts in that it uses labels instead of different directories to display messages that appear to be in one or more "folders". Many users have found the only way to permanently delete a message is to find it in the "All Mail" folder and delete it from there. Some are only able to do that using WebMail from a browser instread of their client app (e.g. Apple Mail).
