As a side to this issue which is causing me issues, I believe their is another one which is related, in the uk on orange if you go into carrier and select auto to off, then connect to t-mobile network it take ages to connect compared to iPad 1 and unlike the iPad 1 if you then flick back to auto it takes you back to orange.

Like I said it stays on t-mobile until you move out of range of the tower when you do this on an iPad 1 but not on iPad 3

I do this a lot to get a 3G near me instead of GPRS on orange

Same problem for me. When connection switches from 3G to Edge or vice versa my iPAD ( 3rd Generation ) looses conntection to the internet without reastablishing automatically. I have to restart my iPAD.

    Germany, Telekom MultiSIM

Returned mine for a refund. This most certainly is a hardware issue, I'll repurchase once it is resolved.... well maybe.

Have the same problem in Germany. According to Telekom the problem is a software issue and will be fixed in the next iOS version.

    Disappointed!

I recently up graded from an IPad 1 to the new IPad (started it up at an Apple store), I passed the IPad 1 to a family member. While at home on Wi-Fi they both work fine. When I would take the IPad to work it worked well on the 4g network and switched to Wi-Fi at work without any issues. Recently we all were together on vacation and my IPad would sporadically not connect to a cellular network. It kept saying I did not have a Cellular Data plan. I called my service provider and they said I had plenty of time and should contact Apple at an hourly rate.  I called my provider back and insisted that they troubleshoot my issue. After several minutes on the phone and providing all my new and old IPad numbers they said it was not registered. It appears that both I Pad’s were issued the same cellular number. Once that was corrected it has worked perfectly..Might be something you will want to check if you have one or more IPad in the house or at work and you have issues.

    Hi,

I've been recommended a solution that for me at least is holding good.

    Try these steps:

    1. Go to settings and switch on SIM pin (you'll need your carriers default pin)

    2. Change the PIN to something else

    3. Switch the PIN off again.

After doing this I can no longer reproduce the issue, but as I've only posted this 5 minutes after changing these settings it's early days.

I'll post back once I have a day or two of testing.

Same problem here.  Every morning after roaming away from wifi to work the ipad (4g 32gb) shows full signal with 3G but no connection in any app until I hard reset the device.

Same here - 3rd gen, 32/4g uk on O2 (using a giffgaff sim). It seems to me the device is showing 3G incorrectly, as I know there is no 3G on O2 where I've had it happen. So when the iPad bugs showing 3G it kills the non-wifi data connection, that can only be fixed by a restart.

    Let's hope it's a software issue, not a hardware one :(

This seemed to have worked for me.  ATT's default pin was 1111 for me here in Colorado, USA.

I agree with twogrant. After 2 plus hours on with Verizon and 2 people trying to transfer service from iPad 2 to new iPad, the tech asked if the cellular was turned on on the iPad 2. It was and I turned it off, still could not get the new iPad to connect and hold a cellular signal. Got a trouble ticket and then looked at the iPad 2 again. It had reconnected. I disconnected and powered it down. Service was then able to establish on the new iPad and they do both have the same cellular number. Our service seems to be stable. IMHO all the connection problems are not stemming from the same cause.

It does not really matter if apple try to delete this thread.

    They won't.

This is now officially a large issue worldwide in several large Tech sites already, and it is a problem that needs to be adressed in one way or the other.

Indeed. Enjoy your time in the spotlight. The median time between Apple media frenzy stories is about 18 hours right now.

My biggest question is:  Is this a software or a hardware problem?

It's a hardware problem. The carriers are slammed by the impact of all these new devices. They just can't handle it. It will get better as they build up infrastructure.

In the meantime, keep returning those iPads. I hope to get a sweet deal on a refurb next year after the carriers have improved their coverage.

This is exactly my problem and I'm in the USA. I love the thing and it works fine while in home area; once I'm in extended cover under Verizon, the 3G/4G go to ****. I called apple today and got a ticket number. I will suggest that if you have this problem to call them if you can like some of you have said. The tech made me restored the iPad like if it was brand new. Now I have to drive to were I will get extended coverage to see if that did the trick. I might be taking a drive tomorrow, but if not on Monday for sure. Will let you know if that worked or not as soon as I find out.

I have the same problem, 64gb wifi + 4G. Get to work and although it shows full connection on the O2 network with giffgaff but safari and apps say no connection. It is only resolved by a full power off and back on.

    Reporting back...

After applying the sim PIN fix, I've been flipping wifi on/off for a few hours now and had no further issues. The only thing I need to test now is physically leaving my Routers coverage footprint and seeing how the device handles none forced hand offs each way.

I'll be doing that this morning...
