Q: Apple TV Drops from Home Sharing

I am having issues with my Apple TV 2 dropping from Home Sharing after roughly 5 minutes of usage.  I currently have the latest updates installed for iTunes, Apple TV and my time capsule router.  I've done a hard reset on the router, my modem, turned off home sharing and turned off Wi-Fi sync.  I've also turned off home sharing on the Apple TV, reset all my computers (two MacBooks and a MacBook Pro all running 10.6.8) and then restarted everything.  The system works for roughly five minutes, but then the problem starts up again.  The system used to work fine, but I've done a few things recently that may have started the problem, such as installing the newest version of Apple TV, installed iOS five on my phone and purchased two new iPads.  I feel confident that the Apple TV is the issue, because the same thing occurs with all three of my computers and airplay and mirroring does not work with my iPhone or iPad's.

I've search the forums for other fixes, but haven't come across anything that seems to work.  Does anyone have any other suggestions on how to solve this problem?

Thanks,

Ryan

1.) I returned my ATV2 (720p) to Amazon.com (at 20% lost because beyond the 30-day). However, I still give kudos to Amazon for excepting a return, because as far as I am concerned upgrading to the new s/w level is what starting the problems.  I find it EXTREMELY frustrating Apple does not let you return to the n-1 level of firmware.  (I suffered some similiar glitches on my iPhone 3GS after upgrading to os 5.0..)  You should be able to restore to what you originally purchased, if they are not going to guarantee the firmware upgrade are going to regress your product. Unless, its the marketing ploy to force a hardware upgrade.

2.) I purchased a new ATV2 (1080p) at BB with a protection plan (Warranties are typically useless but I've found with consumer electronics in the passed 5 years, this has saved me numerous times, and the one time I skipped at BB, a mid-range Samsung ($450.00) blu-rray at the time cost me big time. A bad firmware upgrade which they change  w/o changing the version no. bricked the machine. Lesson learn...don't leave on auto upgrade. I was not alone on that either. I digress.

3.) Dropping the password for the Wifi SSID is still there. ( reported this bug on a separate discussion). If you look what SSID is configure you must retype the password each time. (unlike an iPhone or iPad)

4.) I was able to run audio for over eight 8hours using my iPhone w/Apple Talk. (no video tested yet)

    5) I was NOT able to get iTunes/PC Windows XP to even to even bring up the on APPLE TALK) indicator) although the ATV2 found the library after restesting. (Still no APPLE TALK icon on iTunes (latest version).

6.) Remote App seems to be working ok when running an APPLE TALK feed from the iPhone.

7.) Remote App does NOT find the my libray if I select from iTunes.

8.) Remote App does NOT find my Denon APPLE TALK source.( Perhaps I can only stream TO the denon. Airplay on iPhone finds the denon-receiver

9.) Resetting iTunes yet again....still no APPLE TALK icon, after turning on Home Sharing

10.)Remote App was able to find my Home Share library....  However when in hit the swirly i AppleTalk on the iphone Remote App it does not set the music to the ATV2, but does play havoc on the video on my computer monitors. I cannot select where to broadcast... so it plays/and can control audio on iTunes  but I can't see the monitors.

11.) I still need to test Denon AVR-3311CI Apple Talk upgrade. (The Denon remote app does not seem to be able to get to all the NET/USB features...).  I will need to track down the ip and try the GUI app.I though with APPLE TALK installed on the denon AVR I was suppose to be able to transmit audio to various APPLE TALK receivers (ATV, Airplay speakers, etc). I believe there is a disclaimer from from Denon video is not supported.

Anyway... the combinations do Not seem to be thoroughly tested when it comes to Home Sharing.  Especially, from iTunes itself.  So much for the simplicity of factor of installation Apple used to brag about.

I'm curious. I am assuming the since you "upgraded the software" your ATV2s are the 720p and not  the 1080p?

Personal I haven't found any differences.  I'm just trying to track the various levels.  So far it appears there is alot issues with the home sharing in general since iTunes upgrade and firmware 5.0(4099) for the ATV2 1080p or upgrapded ATV 720p.

I have this problem too (Apple TV 3). It started a few days ago, I will contact Apple in a few hours (its 3:00 AM)

I am very frustrated, I have looked everywhere for a solution, nothing has worked, the best I have managed to get of Home Sharing uptime since the issue started is around 1 hour.

I've been fiddling around with my modem, apple tv 3 and MPB's settings... I can't get it to work properly.

As others have said, I can watch Netflix, YouTube, etc. Home Sharing is the issue here.

We have to start making some serious noise about this.

go to your network adapter, either wifi on computer which hosts Itunes, and disable IPV6.

This solved it for me, and been working for hours now this morning, streaming out the favourite shows to my kids.

I read this in another thread and tried it, and now its been working for as long as I even has had since I got my new ATV3.

    Hi R2742,

Yes both my ATV2's are the 720p variant as its only the ATV3 that is a true 1080p version.

I was looking to buy another ATV (ATV3) but I am going to hold off till I see that this issue is resolved.

I am so frustrated and disapointed in Apple, and I really hope that this is not the start of a slippery slope into mediocracy post Steve Jobs (RIP)

Lets hope Apple wake and smell the coffee, on the off chance that they scan these posts for specific names,

Then I hope Tim Cook, Eddy Cue, Scott Forstall, Jonathan Ive, Bob Mansfield & Jeff Williams, are all having the same issues with their iTunes and Home Sharing because hopefully they might actually start delivering on Steve Job's ethos of devices that were easy to use straight out of the box.

It might also be worht dropping Apple an email to complain. I would suggest media.help@apple.com, as in my experience the one team that will also make sure a voice is heard are the media teams as they seem to understand the importance of customer satisfaction and how loud an angry voice can get and the damage to a reputation that is so difficult to restore.

Come on Tim Cook, Eddy Cue, Scott Forstall, Jonathan Ive, Bob Mansfield & Jeff Williams, get it sorted.

Please find below the email that I sent to the media.help address, perhaps if we deluge them with the same or similar emails, it might draw their attention to do something about this

I would like to bring to your attention the growing voice of frustration on the discussions.apple.com forums regarding the apple TV and iTunes home sharing fiasco that is currently besieging beleaguered believers in apples products.

Recently you released a software update to what was a brilliant and stable product, that has for many thousands of users created huge issues with what is a basic function of the device, resulting in it being next to useless.

What is worse is that so far you have been unwilling to admit that there is any issue or to release any statement suggesting that you are looking into it.

I am hoping that this will land in the inbox of someone who gives a **** and sends it onto somebody who can make a difference, please point them to wards https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3820946?start=15&tstart=0 or just do a search of how many threads there are currently looking for solutions to the same / similar issues.

    Thank you

I will keep trying and let you  know if i have any success, also the last post about the iTunes update working, I have checked mine and I am bang up to date on all my software so that hasn't worked either

    @askbugsy

I returned by ATV2 720p (at 20% price lost) and purchase ATV2 1080p --- Same problems, if not worse.

Also, somehome I got through to brian who said he was the Lead for Apple TV2 (not sure if PM or Engineer) so he was interested in what I found over the next few weeks. He was pleasant and we went through several variations he was apple to repeat..

1.) was the SSID passwords are not remembered if you go to the configure screen to look at SSIDs available.  I was using several different ones for various reasons. He acknowedged, hmm, you're right.  No, ticket open or admitted "bug".

2.) For the network he also managed to make sure your channel is at least 2 channels from any neighbor systems.  funny my other products don't have this issues.. I guess the bandwidths for each channel are pretty close.... but why would it just show up with the new firmware?  He also I advised to post hear as brings the most attention to getting action taken. I will post on the other site as well.   The more complaints from different unhappy customers the better.

For the network dropping I did get a case number

Sorry it was Brian ...Senior Advisor..without giving the case number. Here is the senior advisor number.

Not sure if he will reply without a case number... but enough people are having this issue I don't believe its due to "my" network.

    R2742,

    Nice effort!

I don't believe that it is due to any of our networks as they haven't changed.

The interesting factor for me is that i updated my main ATV2 in the living room after seeing there was a new ATV3 available and had checked for a software/firmware update. As things happen, i didn't do my daughters ATV2 in her room as she was asleep and I didn't want to risk waking her. I then didnt use the main ATV2 up until last week when i realised all the problems, however in the mean time my daughter had quite happily been using hers with no problems.

I had then updated her one because I hadn't realised the scale of the issue and guess what, hers won't work.

I am convinced that the issue lies in iTunes update to (10.6.1 (7)) as neither the ATV's or the remote apps work where they use to. Also when you go into Videos on the iPad/iPhone or into music, you don't get the shared option appearing either.

They really need to get this sorted.

Interesting to see how apple do their internal email, perhaps Tim Cook is TimC.... perhaps a prospective email to the various board members using that guide might bring some attention quicker
