I charged my iphone 4s all night and plugged off at 2am and checked the usage and standby statistics and they were resetted which are fine. From 2am to 8am I didn't use my phone, so the phone was in standby mode. When I woke up I checked the statistics and the usage shows 31 mins and the standby shows 6 hours. What is this 31 mins? I didn't use my phone? Is there a problem with my phone?

    My usage statistics now:

    Usage: 4 hours 29 mins

    Standby 13 hours 27 mins

    the battery is: 31%

And wi-fi, 3G are on; location services, push, fetch are off.

    Is it good or not?

    Thanks for yor help!

Smartphones are ALWAYS doing something, even when you aren't actually using them.  They are checking the cell connection, updating things like your calendar, looking for things to remind you of, checking for alarms you might have set, checking email, looking for text messages, figuring out battery percentage, and other things Apple hasn't mentioned.  As long as your usage isn't the same as the standy, or close to that, you are fine.  Depending on what you are DOING during that 4 1/2 hours, that may be good or bad battery life.  Mine is at 81% after 15 hours, but only 1 1/3 hours of usage.  At this rate, I could go about 3 days without a charge, but I only do that when trying to run the battery down about once a month, as recommended by Apple.

I think a lot of users would be very happy with only 6% drain over night.  The real question is why you don't charge the phone overnight,

Most likely because he was simply testing the battery drain.

I get about the same with nothing running,

    Current Usage: Battery at 29%

    • Usage: 6 Hours, 18 Mins
    • Standby: 11 Hours, 14 Mins

    Should that be a concern?

My biggest battery problem is that is drops significantly on standby. It drops up to 70% over night. However, just the other day, my battery literally went from 88% to 19% in less than 40 minutes, on standby. That has only happened twice.

In reply to the guy above, I don't charge overnight because I like to charge when the battery is below 20%, as recommended.

    Well my settings;

-Wifi on most of the time

-Few important notifications to be pushed. Eg phone, messages, reminders and some apps

-Location services are usually off. Only use it when it is needed.

-Manual carrier has been set instead of automatic

-Brightness between half bar of full

-iCloud, Facetime, iMessages are off unless needed in use

I've used mostly of texting via apps, more than five hours or so. Plus minus 4.5hours of Youtube and gaming. Rest of it i use it to surf web and checking on my facebook.

After three days of experimenting, I've vastly improved my 4S battery life by employing the same approach. I also keep my phone in sleep/wake mode, which ensures message notifications, alarms etc. are received while markedly reducing the drain on my battery. Haven't recharged since Friday morning - it's now 6.30pm NZT and battery is still sitting at above 50 percent.

I suspect it's a case of not assuming all smartphones are created equal. I'm extremely happy with my 4S after a little experimentation. Even so, given the outcry over battery issues, I feel there needs to be a little more information in the manual re managing battery use effectively.

So, you say the usage stat is fine, I'm happy to heart that there isn't big problem with my iphone, so it is a normal thing! in the

    4 1/2 hours usage

    playing music 2 hours

    using internet 1 hours

    playing games 1 1/2 hours

So I have an iPhone 4S running iOS 5.1 and now have the rapid drain on the battery and heating up.  The battery life goes from 100% to 20% in about 4 hours.  I closed just about everything one at a time to see what would make a difference.  I periodically checked the usage and standby times and they were in synch even though it was in standby nearly 100% of the time.  I captured the screen to show to the Apple store but haven't yet had a chance to take it in.

One by one I disabled all apps, bluetooth, WiFi, location services are always off - nothing made any difference except by setting it to Airplane mode.  This would stop whatever was running and the case cooled down.  If I have to leave it in airplane mode, it is useless.

When I had a similar problem with my iPhone 4, Apple told me to reinstall the OS as it must have gotten corrupted (sounds like Windows!)

So what is the recommended solution?

simply callibrating the battery solved all my drainage issues. I let it run down until it shut down itself, then fully recharged without using it(power-off). It took a couple times to notice substantial improvements, but, I'm satisfied with the results. Also did a couple resets in there where you hold the power and home buttons simultaneously until apple logo reappears on screen. Hope this helps you as well.

First, make sure the SIM card is correctly seated in the little drawer.  Then do a reset all settings, and restart the phone.  Make the settings you need, and then retest.

So reading posts of others, I deleted the Skype app.  This made no difference whatsoever; although I suspected that.  I'm sure Apple would love to blame the battery issue on another app but it is not the fault of Skype.  My battery lasted a bit less than 4 hours from 100% although I used it for about 10 minutes.

The battery is currently at 0% so I'll charge it over night and then do the hard reset as others have suggested.  I'll update in the morning.

The real problem in 5.0.1 was the location services, in 5.1 they fixed the location services bug and edited one of the core services to help it. I recently had the issue of my usage and standby being the same, so I deleted recent apps I downloaded and reset all settings, that fixed it up.

From discussions on this Board I took the step and disabled 3G and Mobile Data when I have WiFi access, this has fixed my battery issue. I only enable 3G and Mobile Data when I leave my home network and have no Alternate WiFi access available. From my last 100% charge I have the following statistics:

         Usage:     11 hours 9 minutes

         Standby:     2 Days 16 hours

I have 27% battery charge remaining. I am happy with this it is similar to the battery performance I was getting with my iPhone 4.
