Q: My earlier question re Firefox

I have not used this site before and its late in New Zealand.... i don't know the correct way to add to my earlier question about no admin rights to update F Fox.  I have had a look at other replies on the site and found the reason, it is because "allow user to administrate this computer" is dimmed and disabled. Nothing i do can enable it. I am able to undo the lock and i click on my account but nothing activates the key i need to be able to administer this computer so this is actually my question.. how do i overcome this important problem?

Mac OS X (10.5.8), Firefox 3.6.24

Hi Sue, here's the link to your earlier question...

    https://discussions.apple.com/message/18063582#18063582

We're going to have to fool OSX into making an Admin account if there isn't one on there now.

    Admin Hack...

Starts up like the first time you buy a new Mac, but after filling in all that info again, you should have access to the computer and the other Users & files will still be there... give the new User a different name than an existing one.

This is a very interesting answer thanks BDaqua and i'm certainly going to keep a copy of it but i'd like you to ask you something else first. I did a lot of scouting around, gave up at 1am but did read that the download ( of version 3.6.24) might need to be done again, that something might have gone wrong. This is a possibility as i did the download by dial up. It took 5 hours, should have been ok but the Leopard settings are a bit different to Tiger ( had no problem doing these thing on Tiger) and i wonder whether the computer dozed off to sleep or the phone disconnected. The file shows i have got 3.6.28 but "About Firefox "says its 3.6. 24 the Check Updates says the 3.6.28 is still to be done but i don't have the rights to do it. Something seems to be in limbo.

I have done Permissions Repair and have checked on the file" More Info " that i have rights to Read and Write but nothing works regarding the update. Firefox file says i have Custom Rights but i don't know what that is.

The accounts does say i am Admin so that account seems to be there ok , there is no other account, and surely i needed it to download Firefox in the first place? My password is always accepted. but in this case i'm not being given the opportunity to enter it.

Would it be an idea to uninstall Firefox altogether and redo it?  Thinking of having someone store it on USB via broadband and then onto my computer.Might work?  Best regards.....

Good idea on getting FF on a flash drive.

Open System Preferences>Accounts, unlock the lock, click on the little plus icon, make a new admin account, log out & into the new account.

Do rights work in the new account?

It needs a different username, but Password can be the same.

Oops, i started doing it on this computer ( i've got 1 panther, 1 tiger and the Leopard, nearly a zoo). I'll start up the other computer later and let you know.  I mostly use the 10.4 computer cos i don't have problems. The 10.5 one is noticeably slower even tho its younger and more memory.   I assume i can delete the new account if it doesn't help?

Oh yes, you can delete the account if you like, but it doesn't use much space if you don't do much work in it. & I keep one or 2 extra Admin accounts in case of emergencies.

Back again, on the Leopard this time and has been interesting dvelopments. Things seem sorted for now at least. I had downloaded the update to FF before but went through all that "haven't got the rights" stuff, i fiddled around with access rights, gave up, turned off, next morning found i now had ability to do update. I don't know what fixed it. Then didn't use computer, tired of the problems, then yesterday it flashed up that an update was waiting so i tried to download and ran into repeat of the no rights issue.

Strangely it seemed there was sometimes 2 Firefoxes, one would open with home page but other kept opening with Mozilla telling me i was running 3.6.28 and would never open with home page.Sometimes there were 2 icons, sometimes one.

The file Info told me i had 3.6.28 but About Firefox told me i had version 3.6.24.

This morning there was a question mark in the dock which said Firefox when put cursor on it, i had trashed a Firefox icon last night.   Anyway i recalled the trashed one back again and started to look at both and trashed the question mark, clicked on the remaining FF icon and it opened with my home page and all details show i have the updated version.   So i don't know. The test will be when i empty trash and see if it will dump one FF but leave the other one.

Your answers were extremely helpful as to teaching me things so i will have them printed for future reference.

On a different point it took nearly 10 minutes from clicking the link in the email to get signed in to Apple and to be able to write a reply to you, this can't be right? The 10.4 machine ( all eMacs PowerPC) does it much more quickly and yet it is slowish.

The previous owner has installed Microsoft Messenger, Entourage, Power Point, Excel amd MS Word for me, the only other addition is iPhoto which i wanted. Has the computer got too much on it? And which would be the best MS programmes to keep. I don't use them but would like a programme that can open documents that the Mac can't.

Thank you for everything and especially for your patience.

Oh yes, this site/new forum of Apple's is painful on Dial up!

Open your Applications folder, and look if you have more than one Firefox, or maybe another one not in that folder.

Or Right Click or Control+click on each one & choose Show in Finder.
