Q: ATV3 drops Home Sharing

Hello,

Today I received my ATV3.  Unplugged my ATV2, power and HDMI, and plugged in the ATV3.  Everything worked great for several hours, then all of a sudden, home sharing disappeared.  I have tried closing out of my iTunes, turning home sharing off and on again - on my iMac.  In addition, I have turned off and turned on home sharing on ATV3, and even restarted (not reset) ATV3, and still cannot get home sharing to come back.

Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks in advance!

Poof!  Home sharing is back.  I guess I need to walk out of the room more often :-)

ATV3 is back on track - thanks for reading my question - if you did...

    Poof!  It's gone again...

    Anyone have any suggestion?

I plugged in my ATV2 - and it sees my iTunes...home sharing doesn't drop on it...

But for some reason ATV3, home sharing comes and goes...

    Thanks again!

To solve that deactivate the standby (sleep) mode in Apple TV.

When an ATV says you need to turn on Home Sharing it doesn't necessarily mean that.

It just means it cannot FIND the computer with iTunes.

There are a variety of causes including wireless interference.

When you see this on the ATV first check that you have a route to the internet.  The easiest way to do that is to check YouTube.  If that's not working then you have no connection to either wireless or your home network.

If you have YouTube and still cannot access your computer, then verify that iTunes is actually RUNNING and that home sharing is STILL turned on.

If it's running then there is an issue with the router.  If you are running wireless then consider relocating the router or replacing it.

We have had nothing but problems with certain router models.

[edit]  One other thing, sometimes an iTunes update turns OFF home sharing.  I've seen this happen twice in the past couple of years).

    Cheers.

    Thank you for the idea(s)!

I tried them both, and it still drops home sharing.  It will even do it in the middle of a movie...it looks like it is resetting itself when it does it in the middle of a movie, as it drops out of homes sharing, then home sharing reappears.  I know I have access to internet, as I can see iTunes store for movie rentals.

The two other things I noticed with ATV3, is that it seems to take a lot longer to 'cache' the movie than the ATV2.  In addition, it seems to effect all other devices using my WiFi - like it's hogging bandwidth - when compared to ATV2 - don't know how to prove that one, it just seems like it.

All I know is ATV2 worked fine, and for some reason ATV3 is causing havoc.

If it helps, I'm using either ATV via WiFi, through Time Capsule base station 802.11n (b/g compatible), software version 7.6.1

Last night, I gave up on ATV3, went back to ATV2, and haven't had a problem.  If I can't solve it today, I'll just send back ATV3, and live with 720p video.

    Thanks for your help!

We have an ATV1 and two ATV2's.

One of our ATV2 boxes gave us nothing but grief - was actually TWICE replaced under warranty, and is now running perfectly.  (The warranty replacement worked for about a day or two, and then same problem.)

Though I don't have a Time Capsule and can't speak to its reliability I would expect that it's rock-solid.  We have had two brands of routers that didn't hold the signal (one was cisco and the other was dlink).

Our Dlink DIR 615 has held solid for three months without a single drop.  (DIR-655 was also solid).  But one in the WBR series as well as the cisco was dropping several times a day even during playback.

It took until after we picked up yet another router to isolate that the problem was definately one of our ATV2's.  (That's the one that ended up being reaplced twice under warranty).

Since you have free telephone support right now and you're under warranty I'm curious if you have had any luck with the support line?

I've had a few home sharing issues with my new ATV3 after about 1 hour and they were always resolved by trekking into another room and resetting home sharing on my iMac. Tonight after 3 shutdowns in less than 30 minutes of trying to watch a podcast I gave up and put the ATV2 back into use. Lo and behold over 2 hours of use and zilch happens..........ATV3 will be going back for a refund.

What I have written here (https://discussions.apple.com/message/17702579#17702579, 5th posting) potentially solved my issue on Win7. I still need to do longer tests, but as home sharing always dropped after 3-5 minutes before opening the ports, watching 40+ minutes of video without interruption looks promising.

I don't know about the situation for Mac users. Maybe you find some useful info here http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2972 under 5.

Thanks for all of the great responses!

I just got off the phone with Apple Support (fantastic support, can't give enough accolades!), and we spent about 45 minutes, trying everything from home sharing to airplay.  Support thought there might be a proximity issue, as my ATV3 is only 3 inches from my Time Capsule (Airport).

I'm still not sure why proximity issue with ATV3, vs none with ATV2 - new hardware maybe?!...

Anyway, came up with two solutions - 1: use Ethernet cable, or 2: change Airport to channel 9 vs Automatic.

As mentioned before, I am running Time Capsule (Airport) at 802.11n (b/g compatible).  Went into Airport utility, and changed channel selection from Auto to Channel 9.

At first blush, the problem seems to be solved!  I will update post after playing a few more movies...

I know, a reply to a reply to a reply - all mine...but if it helps anyone...

I did some research - the new ATV3 does have two antenna vs one with ATV2...that might explain the interference with the WiFi...not sure.

Anway, the problem resurfaced (dropping Home Sharing)...ended up connecting ATV3 to Airport via Ehternet cable...

After a couple of movies, even that failed - dropped Home Sharing again.

Just got off phone with Support - returning this ATV3 for new ATV3...

Received my replacement ATV3 a few days ago, and so far so good.

Haven't changed any settings, and the replacemnt ATV3 hasn't dropped Home Sharing once.  Unfortunatly, Apple snuck in an iTunes update, while I was waiting for ATV3 replacement, so I don't know if that effected anything or not - supposedly the iTunes update only fixed an ATV TV show sorting issue...

Have ran the ATV3 through it's paces - waking from sleep mode, interupting a rented movie to switch to home sharing, jumping from one movie to another in home sharing, jumping from screen saver, to home sharing...so far so good.

Looks like the other ATV3 was just a faulty unit...whew!

Thanks for all of the replies and suggestions!

I just exchanged a third ATV3 today, and still having drop home sharing connection.

So it has to be Itunes and ATV issue.

I just wait in the mean time until Apple has a fix for it.

Hi, my ATV3 went on the blink last night. It suddenly lost internet connection and therefore resulting in the loss of AirPlay.

Reset and Restarted the device and my wireless box (an Airport Extreme). The ATV3 can see my home network but it cannot connect to the internet via it.

My Macs and ipads can so the internet is working.

Seems that there is an issue with ATV3?!

    Apple can you help?

Home sharing with the new Apple TV / iTunes update is just broke.  Only works for a bit unless you restart iTunes or disable / re-enable Home Sharing.  Use to work great until the last updates.  This is not a network (router, firewall, ...) issue - just a (bad) regression in Apples software.  Hopefully they fix this soon, hard to believe its been broke this long already.  The Remote app update also fails to connect to Apple TVs (but does connect to iTunes) for many people as well.  Poor QA all around. :(

I have yet to see any suggestion that actually works other than reverting to previous versions of fwr / iTunes - which is a pain / joke to do.
