I plugged my camera into usb port to try to upload pics but the comp doesnt seem to be recognizing it because I cannot find the camera anywhere on my mac.  i tried "computer" and it does not show up.  why isnt the mac recognizing my camera is plugged in?

If you launch Image Capture (in Applications) and plug in the camera does Image Capture see the camera?

Has this ever worked for that camera in the past with that same computer you are using?  Does the camera have a mode setting for uploading its pictures?

I am really not sure what your problem is at this point.  But what I usually recommend as a first attempt at clearing usb, firewire, and bloutooth problems is to do a smc and pram reset.  Might not help but it couldn't hurt.

Ok I got the pics uploaded.  I just had to turn the camera on (it was different on my old comp).  However, I still wonder why nothing happens when I stick the memory stick directly into the computer.

Not sure unless the machine may only sense sense the usb connection at the time the camera is on and then it is physically plugged in or I would also think already plugged in and then the camera turned on.  That is the way external usb hard drives are sensed.

how do u do a smc pram reset? i dont even know what that is?

I gave you the links to smc and pram reset above and again here (the blue lettering represets an active link).
