That is odd...
What about resetting the Express to Factory reset and then installing the firmware upgrade?

Well, I considered that but after all the work involved setting it up in the first place I am reluctant to go down that road again if it's not really necessary. Ie not sure if a fw upgrade is worth the effort?

I'm having the same issue. It's very odd. I have 2 Expresses and I'm having the same problem you describe but I get different error codes -6727 and -6753. Both seem to be working fine so a factory reset seems extreme but I know some times it's what it takes. I'm upgrading from firmware 7.6 to 7.6.1. My TimeCapsule updated to 7.6.1 just fine. no problem.

you can save all of an airport's settings in a "configuration file."
in airport utility, select the airport, then go to file > export configuration file... then you can reset the device and then re-import the configuration file to restore the saved settings.

i solved my "error -6721" problem by performing a factory reset.
others have reported fixing similar errors by simply unplugging their airports and plugging them back in again (without having to reset).
one method or the other should work.
