Here's what happens.  When I press the power button, I hear the chime, then I get the grey apple, then a status bar filling up.  But it only fills up 1/4 of the way, stops, then the status bar empties and starts filling up again, only 1/4 of the way then  the computer powers off.  Earlier today it worked fine, then I had two or three grey curtains (kernal panic ?), now it's doing what I wrote above.  Nothing new, applications, memory, etc.

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.8)
