It should just work, no need to remove any forks.
I think the 10.5 Install is corrupted somewhere, does GraphicConverter load & display them OK on this Mac?
After Repairing the drive I'd first try reapplying the 1058 Combo Update, 10.5.8...
Repair Permissions afterwords, reboot.

GraphicConverter on that Mac also displays the files as corrupted (with no error message).
The rest of your answer is being handled just now. Coming back with results.
Thank you, BDAqua!

If this is an install error, maybe this addition info is of little interest:
- gif files are seen ok
- png files have the same problem
- there is an example of a tiff file, when copied between the external drive and the internal drive, is corrupted when viewed from the external drive, but ok when the local version of it is seen! This is contrary to jpg-behaviour.
The install corruption hypothesis sounds logical with so much weirdness..

Hmmm, waiting for more clues, but yes, certainly strange set of circumstances!?
Do they have Perian or any other QT extenders that might need 10.5.x updates applied?

Disk did not need repair.
Combo update did not work.
Machine and OS might then be ok.
I'll try to swap a MyBook disk with him and see. I have upgraded it several times.
Coming back, but it may take some days.

Connecting the MyBook to the FireWire chain helped!
When files were moved on the Lepoard machine, from Freecom to MyBook, they became readable on the MyBook disk.
I might come back if we decide to try to update the Freecomm disk.
Any hypothesis of the cause of this error?
Observe that the Freecom was ok on same machine as Tiger, and on another machine as Lion.

What Format is the Freecomm Disk?

Whew, I get dizzy trying to figure this one out!
I can generally come up with a hypothesis even when there's no apparent cure, but I just can't picture anything on this.

The cure was to move from the Freecom to the MyBook (ref 16.April 2:19pm)!
So he's happy!
But one of these days (weeks, months?) I will see if the Freecom has an update!
BDAqua, thanks for being so present on this one!
