I am sorry to report that I am running an early 2011 MacBook Pro 15" with 256 MB AMD 6490 gpu and that my video also seems to be entirely CPU based. CPU usage grows linearly with video chat size. I am using a dual screen setup right now, with my external monitor running at 1920x1200 and the internal monitor running 1650x1080. Using a moderate size chat window (I estimate something close to 800x600 size), I am seeing CPU usage around 300%. Trying to go full screen ups that to about 400%.

I hope that this is indeed indicative of the beta status of iMessage and that I hope that video processing does get offloaded properly to the GPU in the future.

I will have to experiment with removing the external monitor to see if that makes a difference.

    Hi,

As not everyone is suffering from this it is unlikely to be tackled in any update.

Right, Apple never fixes any bugs unless it impacts every single users.

    Hi,

Unless it can be traced to a specific hardware/software combo (of just Apple Protducts) it will not even be declared a Bug.

I would look to Add-ons that don't work in Lion.

iGlasses for instance is System wide but could (previously used by iChat)

Any other Ecamm Utility that worked up to Snow Leopard

    Chax (again no Lion version)

Possibly something audio like Sound Flower (That has had issue in the past at OS updates).

If people had some of these utilities and Add-ons then I would think about deleting the .plists for iChat (Messages beta still uses them) so that any references or call to the item is deleted.

As the camera is connected via USB I would also exclude all external USB items for a test period.

I guess they don't have sarcasm in the UK.

Plain - vanilla - install.  Current OS.  Current hardware.  CPU spikes during video chat.

Multiple folks are having the issue - just because you and some others aren't, doesn't mean that it's not a bug.

I'm fully aware that this isn't the developers forum, but that's a good point - if it's still there in the next release, I'll log it as a bug, with multiple users, configurations, and machines impacted.

    Humm,

Of the seven people in this Thread (including me) only 3 mention they have MacBook Pro (Early 2011)

Of those three one does state they are using a dual screen/display set up.

The Pics in the Download from the Original Poster shows IMAgent spiking/running at 100%

It also shows they are running some Flash stuff in a Web Browser at the same time.

On the other hand it did seem to be laptops that suffered the reducing Audio issue where the Ambient Noise Reduction seemed to be over zealous  (Yes it did cross over into other Models that also ended up with the Ambient Noise Reduction Option.)

Not that it ever seemed to get acknowledged either.

    I seem to remember sarcasm.

I thought it was upgraded a while back.
