My gear icon just says "Add to favorites..." I should mention I bought this from a friend so I wasn't the original person to have named it. Still...

Hi,
in my Mavericks OS, there was no gear icon, so I right-clicked and rename was an option.

I had the same (Mavericks) issue.

I found on the newer OS X I had to use double finger click to get this menu to come up and let me rename the trackpad.
