    The migration assistant typically maps the data to the correct folders without messing up existing applications that are on your system.  The only real exception is when trying to migrate from a newer operating system, or from one Mac CPU platform to another (Intel to PowerPC or vice versa).   As long as you aren't doing either, the Migration Assistant is typically faster.
