Q: "Cannot open page" issue

My iPad3 has worked ok until last week. But then...

Sometimes, it will not open pages in Safari. It keeps giving me "Cannot Open Page" because 1. server cannot be found or 2. Internet is not connected. This may go on for a minute and then it opens it fine. Also, it opens some links on the page and not other. It also seems to be happending more in the past two days. This issue is driving me crazy!!!

Anybody have same problem?

Are you seeing this same problem on other wireless networks?

Try the suggestions here iOS: Troubleshooting Wi-Fi networks and connections

After joining a Wi-Fi network, you notice the signal strength is weak or fluctuates

    • Try moving closer to the Wi-Fi router or base station to see if the Wi-Fi signal improves.
    • Check for sources of potential interference.
    • Remove your iOS device from any case, stand, or other attachment to see if the Wi-Fi signal improves.
    • Open Safari and try to load a webpage to see if the Wi-Fi signal improves.

If you are unable to access the Internet while connected to a Wi-Fi network

    • If you are using a public or commercial network that requires a login or subscription, see this article for more information.
    • Verify that you are selecting the correct network if you are in a location with multiple Wi-Fi networks.
    • Verify that the Wi-Fi network settings are correct. You can view and configure Wi-Fi settings using the following steps:
      • Tap Settings > Wi-Fi.
      • Locate the Wi-Fi network you are currently using and tap The right arrow button.
    • If you've verified that your settings are correct and the issue persists, try the following:
      • Tap "Forget this Network" to reset settings for this Wi-Fi network, including the password. Then try connecting to the network again.
Note: This can be useful if you identify a network issue and want to prevent the device from automatically using this network in the future.
      • Reset network settings by tapping Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings. Note: This will reset all network settings, including passwords, VPN, and APN settings.

Note: If the Wi-Fi network uses MAC address filtering, you will need to add the MAC address to the access list for the Wi-Fi router. The MAC address for your device is listed as the Wi-Fi address in Settings > General > About.

I am not sure it's a connectivity issue as some links on the same page will open and some will not.

Also, whenever I have this issue with Safari, mail is working as well as other Internet-using apps.

Another thing, we were just in Orlando, and I was having issues there also. I just though it was their Wi-Fi.

Went to Apple store few hours ago, they re-installed the iPad, when I came home, still same.

Those few minutes Apple guy was playing with it, was working fine...

You may also want to check your proxy settings, particularly if you are using workplace wifi.

Same problem and it's definately the iPad and not the wifi as on the same network I have my iPhone streaming music from the net. If I switch networks (I have 2) the page works but then it happens to another page soon after. Ive tried all of Apples suggestions, rebooted iPad, reset networks, no luck  Hoping that iOS 6 fixes this.time waster!

I may have the solution, at least its been working for me. If you go into settings and choose Network and then tap the blue arrow on the right of the wifi network you usually use you'll come to settings for the network. Someone told me that the intermittent not finding the web page and then later finding it sounded like a DNS resolution problem. He told me to change the DNS setting. I suggest you first write down the number in the DNS slot, generally a sequence of numbers separated by periods/full stops. Delete that number. Then enter this number... 208.67.222.222

This number is for the OpenDNS which is an organisation which supplies free DNS services (you do a web search for opendns and read about it at for example wikipedia). For some reason our ISP's DNS servers are having trouble resolving certain DNS addresses (eg, www.bbc.co.uk) for a certain period of time. OpenDNS is probably a more robust service than your ISP's DNS servers. It's working for me, no hangs all day. If you want you can always re-enter the DNS number which you wrote down earlier and you haven't lost anything. Works for me.

This issue has been so frustrating. I have tried many things to resolve this problem. I am so glad I tried one more option, and finally, it seems to be fixed. Thanks so much for alerting others to try changing the DNS number. Yahoo!!

Fantastic I've been trying to sort this out for nearly 2 weeks and it's been driving me nuts. Typed in the DNS number that you gave and hey presto.   Problem resolved.  Thank you

    Thanks All Day Breakfast.

I have had a longstanding issue whereby my iPad Safari browser could not find certain websites. I changed the DNS setting to the Open DNS and it now work fine.

    Hi All Day

Just wanted to say thanks so much for your suggested solution for the problem with opening websites.  I changed the DNS number and so far no problem.  This issue has been going on for about a year driving us mad!

    Thanks again - you're a star!
