You were on the right track, but now the disk free space doesn't give me much hope you'll recover anything. The .MTS files are in fact the video files:
Total Video Converter can convert these files to MPEG-4 that iMovie, iTunes, iPhone, and iPod can use. First double check that there aren't any .MTS files left with http://apps.tempel.org/FindAnyFile/ And if it can't find any, use one of these data recovery tools:
Once you have it, then you can use Total Video Converter to get it to a format you can use. I have a Sony DSC-HX-100V and it makes the same sort video files.

I've requested a moderator move this post to the iMovie forum, so once you do recover the files, or create new ones, someone in the iMovie forum can help you import them.
