Numbers uses text boxes and shapes just like Pages, so you can basically do the same thing in Numbers that you can in a Pages page layout document. The concept of a "page" in Numbers is a little more fluid, and page headers and footers are more rigid, but a cover letter should be no problem.

    Kevin,

This is one of my disappointments with iWork. The text tools that we take for granted in Pages are crippled in Numbers. Text Boxes in Numbers aren't anything like the ones in Pages and seem to have a mind of their own.

We must choose between Pages, with poor Table tools, or Numbers, with poor writing tools. My advice is that what you choose will depend on the nature of your document and where you are most comfortable working. Being more comfortable in Numbers, I think I'd stay there and use table cells for my text, where I have more formatting options than with Text Boxes. Remember that you can have as many tables per sheet as you wish, that they each can have as many or as few cells as you wish and they can be freely positioned.

    Hi Jerrold

    I'm a bit puzzled.

Which features are you missing in Numbers text boxes ?

I see only one : can't link text box so that text flow from one to the other.

    Yvan,

I just don't like the interface. No wrapping around objects, no inline option, no Paragraph Styles. Not being able to set the overall size of the box before filling it with content. Imagine if you could set a table inline within a text box and let it move with the text, as you would set a Mail Merge link in Pages. I suppose what bothers me is that the code must all be there, available, but disabled to differentiate the two modes.

    OK

    I understand better.

I already wrote that I'm dreaming of a modified design for iWork :

Pages Layout and Numbers would receive the entire set of features available in Pages Layout

Pages would drop the Layout format whose features would be in Numbers.

I would like that arrangement too.

I would also like to have a mode for viewing only the Sheet, leaving off the Sheets Pane and Table Styles, menus, tools, etc., with the option to toggle them all back on at once.

    But now I really digress.
