With 4GB of RAM, the Intel HD Graphics 3000 uses 384K for video memory. Increasing RAM to 8GB allows the Intel graphics to use 512MB for video memory. Note Apple says that the best graphics performance comes from using matched memory, ie, 2x1GB, 2x2GB, etc because memory interleaving increases system and graphics performance.
