Yes, IF you purchase an unlocked phone or your UK carrier will unlock it for you and you get a sim from a compatible US carrier (probably AT&T).
However, the iPhone does not have a worldwide warranty or service. So if something goes wrong with it, you would have to send it back to the UK for service. That isn't an issue unless it breaks, I have had each version since the first and have yet to get one repaired, but it is something to keep in mind.

Your best bet is to buy unlocked from an Apple retail store or Apple online
Note this is the ONLY source of unlocked iPhones in UK
or if you want a contract then consider O2 as they are the most flexible
when it comes to unlocking and will now unlock any of their contract iPhone 4S
without fuss or debate and can be done immediately you after you buy .
Other UK carriers are nothing like as flexible
