I've purchased a 4S this week and I find that the signal is good if it's not being held but when I hold it in my hand I can watch the signal bars drop to no signal within 20 seconds. If I put it down the signal will restore within 20 seconds back to where it was.
I know that the iphone 4 had the issue with signal strength and integrity but I thought that this had been ironed out by the time the 4S came along.
I have a silicone and hard skinned case coming so I'll be interested to see if when my skin isn't in direct contact with the phone will the signal still drop.
On the one call I have received so far the call quality was fine but then as I had the phone to my ear I don't know how many bars of signal were showing.
One solution told me to turn off the 3G settings to help improve the signal quality

The case for the phone arrived and it went on the phone a few days ago. Since then the signal quality has been consistent with no drop off in signal when handling the phone. This seems to have sorted the problem hopefully.
I just got it to reproduce the issue exactly.. Go into Settings, General, then Date & Time and turn off "Set Automatically". Apparently when I had this turned on the signal drops to 1 bar, the location icon shows up, then it goes to "Searching". Once I turned this off all the bars came back on. I can flip it back on, wait about 10 secs, and watch the bars drop to nothing.
This definately started with IOS6 on my iPhone 4s.. and I'm pretty sure that's a software bug.
No other method worked and I tried them all including a sim card replacement. Hopefully Apple will investigate this.
