Has anyone noticed a font display issue in the Dictionary app.  In the image below note how part of the letter o and the final e are missing in the word the italicized word development.  By grabbing the vertical line separating the search results column--the left side of the window--from the definitions column--the right side of the window--and moving it either left or right--effectively changing the size of the two columns--the missing part of the two letters appear and disappear--they flicker.  The issue seems only to affect italicized letters.  The issue seems only to affect specific italicized letters in a word.  For example, in this instance, the first two e's in development are not affected and with the exception of the letter v none of the other letters in the word are affected.

Any ideas or suggestions?

What word are you looking up? Run FontBook and see if you have a corrupted font.

Thank you etresoft.  I launched FontBook and had all fonts validated.  Palatino reported duplicates: each Palatino font--regular, italic, bold, and bold italic--has a disabled duplicate.  Font display issue still exists.  Suggestions?

I would still like to know what word you were looking up so I can try to reproduce the problem.

Sorry.  The word is restriction.  The issue affects any word though, not just restriction.

Interestingly the issue seems to disappear when the font is enlarged to some size.

Follow this link to a YouTube video containing two QuickTime screen captures.  First clip in video was grabed with the large font setting.  Apparently no issue.  Second clip--starts roughly at 5 seconds--in video was grabbed after font size was reduced.  Issue is apparent.

Interestingly it does not seem to be limited to italicized font only, as I previously stated. Notice the second r in restricted, which is beneath development, is flickering in the second clip.

There is no problem with Dictionary or fonts. What kind of machine and video card do you have?

In your example, it looks like the background on each character is overlapping the previous character.

Maybe check those duplicate fonts, perhaps the "duplicate" is actually the system font. FontBook will show you the font file in the Finder.

Late 2006 iMac with NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT 128 MB.  Thank you for the suggested next steps, Etresoft.  Will check those duplicate fonts when some unallocated time presents itself and update thread then with the results. Till then.

I believe I've found the culprit.  The General menu in Preferences offers the option for using "LCD font smoothing when available"--see image.  The issues I was having with the fonts in the Dictionary app went away when I stopped using the LCD font smothing option.  Down side, now the fonts in Trailer descriptions (trailers.apple.com) are quite fuzzy.
