Same issue here. This problem is incredibly annoying especially when the iCloud System Status page says everything is working when it's clearly not. Another user explained that this is probably a load balancing problem and since Mail automatically sets up your iCloud account to point to a specific server, whenever that server goes down, is overloaded or whatever, you get the error. Apple either needs to fix this on the server side or update Mail to not be server specific. It's crazy that this happens constantly and it's not being fixed.

It's a semi-known issue that has been going on for the last few days. You can do two things:
a) Contact AppleCare and let them know you are affected by this issue. They can contact engineering on your behalf and let them know you are having the issue.
b) Send feedback to Apple directly. http://www.apple.com/feedback/icloud.html
I have been experiencing this issue on both of my Macs, and my iOS devices. It's very annoying...

I have the same problem. Really annoying. Its embarresing that the email account that works the least in Apple's Email Application is *Apple's* provided email account.
In general iCloud works very, very poorly for me. Safari Bookmarks, iBooks bookmarks, Address Book, Calendar. Stuff randomly syncs. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't, sometimes it randomly appears after some time.

I am having this same issue with my iphone's icloud mail account. Everytime I open my inbox I get a notice that my icloud password is incorrect even minutes after I have entered and verified the correct password. It does not seem to be saving the correct password and the one that shows up in it's place is not even the correct amount of digits so I have no idea where it is coming from. I know this is not an issue with the phone it's self because I recently purchased yet another iphone and the same issue carried over. My time is very valuable to me and this has become a huge waste of time because I use my phone and recieve mail many times a day and I have to stop what I am doing to clear the notifications everytime I check or even recieve an email. Also, even signing in to my mail on icloud.com is not working properly.. Who do I need to contact to take care of this problem?

Hey ! Laady!
iam out of country and so use of Apple Care is muted as impractical. So anyway, the dreaded "password not recognized by server" keeps leering away at me. This happening 7 days after i leave plus no Apple Care, just what the doctor ordered.. the sick doctor that is.
So anyway, today i'm strolling through 'System Prefs' and my eyes light on 'Mail,Contacts&Calendars' hmmm_click.
The path found:
_System Preferences_Mail,Contacts & Calendars_icloud_ Then: enter icloud email address
enter icloud password
_Create Apple ID
Worked like a charm and it may for others.
