I first attempted to transfer my info via Migration assistant and a firewire cable. The computers saw each other and started the process, but hung at "5 hours remaining" for over 24 hours.
Hmmm, was this FW Network it sounds like?
The best way is to put the G4 in Target mode...
Then only the new iMac needs to run Setup Assistant or Migration Assistant, but you don't choose from another computer, you choose from a Time Machine or other Disk, because now the G4 is only a Big FW Hard Drive.

Thanks for the response. No problem getting the G4 in FW target disk mode and yes- sorry forgot to mention-I chose the option to have the iMac connect to a time machine or other disk with the G4 in target disk mode and it does not work. Still looking for help -

Hmmm, we have an unkown problem then...
OPen Console in Utilities & either warch for clues when you try again, or check the system log for the Date/Time of the failure.

I just decided to proceed with the setup assistant on the iMac and choose "don't transfer now," just so I could verify that the FW disk was appearing and its NOT. The G4 is clearly in TDM, but the iMac is not registering it. I'm now wondering if my FW cable (though brand new) went bad. How can I test for this? Thanks
