I tried that but it didn't

    You couldn't send a suggestion?

So, following a suggestion earlier in the thread I bought a small fridge magnet and put it over the sensor on the iPad.  Now to fire it up all I have to do is slide the magnet out of the way

    Seriously?

and that's easier than sliding your finger across the screen?

I can see it being more convenient in some cases... especially in cases where the ipad is mostly stationary on a desk or sofa...

    ???

How is sliding a magnet (that could easily get lost/misplaced) across a screen with your finger "more convenient" than sliding your finger across a screen without a magnet?

Well, considering how the smart cover (and thus the magnet works), I'm assuming that you don't actually need to slide it anywhere, just pick it up off the ipad and it activates.

Although I'll be honest I just tried it with some magnets and it didn't really work so well for me.

Maybe i didn't use the right type of magnets, there are three magnetic "areas" and i only have a tiny magnet ball, so I dunno.

But wouldn't a configurable slide-to-unlock give them a stronger patent?

Yes, I could.  I suggested that they make the slide-to-unlock feature configurable, but it didn't work - my iPad still tells me to slide to unlock.

And they tell me that Americans don't do irony.  FWIW I relented and bought a smart cover.  It works fine but now I have this pesky cover to flip out of the way.

Seriously, as I told the feedback people, making the feature configurable is a no-brainer - for my purposes and for the many others discussed here.

Just what we need.  Another disaster like the side switch that is now configurable to satisfy the whiners.

Hey! You better not touch my configurable side switch!

I want my rotation lock, and if configuration is the only way to get it, I'll take it. Seriously, how often do you need to mute your iPad, compared to lock it's orientation?!

    It's not a phone!

And whoops, now I accidentally moved the thread in another direction. Sorry bout that. Forget I said anything about the side switch.

As far as removing the "Slide to unlock" function? No. Nor would I expect it to change anytime soon.

Yes. Apple was granted this patent recently.

I too would like to ask about this slide to lock function.

I don't have an Apple device, nor an all-touchscreen device.  And I just tap one key and the screen comes back on. It's especially useful when I am waiting to see something, to see if something has downloaded, if someone has finished typing on WhatsApp... etc.

I just click a key and it comes up.

What puts me off the iPhone (and others) is that you'd have to click the button and slide.

"no, still typing/downloading".....waits...... click, Slide..... no still.........................

Rather than "click - no still...."...................................... Click... no stilll.....

If it were on a desk, arm of a sofa, table etc, you don't need that ability to protect it from doing things.  My phone has NEVER had a lock on it.  It goes in a holster when I am not using it.  Never in my pocket.  It's either in there, on a flat table, or in my hand.

What did you want to ask? Describing what you have in your current phone doesn't constitute a question.

Dear Meg - boy you are blunt!

I'd like to ask the subject of this thread!

Describing what I have describes exactly my question: I described what my phone does, and want to know if the iPhone does the same or similar.
