At least your response was brief.

There is nothing left to add to the conversation here. Not by you or the current anti-you.

Do any of your posts, or anyone else's, change the fact that there has never been a Flash plugin on iOS and now there never will be? If not it is just wasted verbiage.

That fact is not obnoxious, it is just a fact.

If you know differently please correct me and tell me how your lengthy posts are going to change anything.

Uh oh! Look out! It's a multimedia developer! Now I see why rfoil is so ratcheted up. He wants to be the true voice of reason with regard to technology. He made an .swf! Whoopee! He converted a Flash app to JavaScript. Click this, show that. Brilliant. You showed an enterprise web developer, who develops web apps that do a billion transactions a month, a thing or two. Maybe three. Impressed!

And since it takes him 30 minutes to write a paragraph, he makes an ad hominem attack, that I must not be a real developer, or else I wouldn't have the time to write this. Have you noticed I am absent from this discussion for several days at a time? You seem to check in regularly. What? The world is not beating down your door to develop some Flash doo dah? The beer companies have turned to JQuery to make that condensation on the beer bottle, along with the neat-o revolving billboard effect? Whoopee!

FYI, I am taking a vacation, being spring break time. I am wasting my own free time, conversing with idiots who cannot present any proof that Adobe Flash runs just fine on mobile devices. Or idiots that niggle about someone claiming Adobe has stopped developing Flash for mobile, and claim that AIR and Flash are the same thing. Uh, did you read that on a blog? Are you the type of "developer" that takes advice from journalists? Yeah, English majors typically are the best ones to consult about technology and writing code. In fact, I called up my high school English teacher to have a discussion about the merits of active record vs repositories.

However, rfoil does prove my point that it is simple to convert Flash to Javascript. Indeed, everyone who reviews JQuery vs. Flash contends that JQuery is much easier to master. If rfoil can do it, any extasy addled, pierced and tatted graphic designer can do it too... But really bad developers are stuck in their ways and expect Adobe Creative Suite to be their bread and butter for their entire career. They are afraid they have to learn something new, and blame it all on Apple.

You think iOS will be around for ten years? I doubt it. Maybe they will still call it that, but it won't be iOS as we know it, and iOS developers will need to learn new skills. Flash is near EOL. I personally think even Silverlight is better, but these plugins are a thing of the past... Just another vector for spreading malware, as any hacker can pop up a dialog box saying you need to download this new plugin, and a certain percentage of people will do it... The origin of the latest Mac "virus".

You like to point out that people are wrong, but it is in fact you who are wrong. You take people's words hyper-literally, without regard to the context of the discussion, just to be a richard...

">Flash is being discontinued on mobile devices.<

Wrong.  Flash player development for mobile BROWSERS has stopped.  AIR application development for mobile continues.  This conversation is degraded with information that is not entirely correct."

See what I mean? The person was obviously talking about Flash on browsers, and Adobe's announcement of ending support. But you need to be a richard, and split hairs, like a true überknob. AIR is not Flash. That's why they call it AIR. It is the Adobe Integrated Runtime. It can do more than Flash, such as interact with the operating system beyond what Flash can do (which, given Adobe's security record, is scary). If you have the Flash plugin on your browser, you need to download a separate installer for AIR. Flash runs in the browser, and AIR allows geniuses who have mastered Adobe authoring tools to now create desktop apps. Great! There aren't enough lame, slow, and bloated desktop apps. Thanks once again, Adobe!

Case in point -- if you had Comcast cable and used their Xfinity web app to watch on your computer, you had to download AIR and an Xfinity desktop app, which provided authentication for the Flash player. Flash runs in a sandbox, and cannot persist authentication information, hense the use of AIR, which is not Flash.

So if you want to split hairs, I am more than willing to do so as well. AIR is not Flash. Period. You have to make some righteous point, but the funny thing is that YOU ARE WRONG!!!

You are wrong, multimedia jockey... These things are better left to experts who know what they are talking about. We ditched Flash 6 years ago, and I have (thankfully) forgotten more about Flash and AIR than you will know.

Yes, I even looked into FLEX, and it seemed really neat-o, until I saw the horrible gallery and how sluggish the FLEX UIs are even on powerful desktop computers. Then the $10,000 per CPU price tag on BlazeDS Server. F that!

We also did not use Acrobat, because we felt it was not good usability to force users to download external software to use our website. So we were even worse than Apple in rejecting Adobe!

We are discussing WHY Flash is EOL for mobile... Because, in case you haven't read up on this, there seems to be a few people who think this is a conspiracy and Flash is just great. It is bad on computers, and abysmal on mobile devices.

What is a reasonable length for a post? Please let me know, so I can be on your good side. You have all these points! You are like the Donald Trump of points on this forum. Can you lend me some points so I can get a pizza? Oh, the points are worthless... Too bad! Well, then... I guess winning you over doesn't matter.

Maybe you should talk to the web developers at Apple. They can easily add validation, using, uh, ActionScript... Oh no, using JavaScript, to limit the size of a post. Clearly they have not done that.

But wait, it is not JavaScript. It is LiveScript... Or ECMA Script. Yes, I am still laughing at you rfoil, not with you...

I don't care about winning people over or convincing them to buy an iPad. I care about the dialectic process. Getting to the truth. If you are hoping for Cliff Notes, don't hold your breath.

So I am still waiting for that video of Flash rockin' on an Android device. Come on! I came back after over a week of being off this discussion, and all I see is school m'arm-ish b.s. and idiots trying to be hair-splitting experts (AIR development continues! Yes, Einstein, but AIR is not Flash, which is what we are discussing (directed at rfoil)).

I am tired of the few people in just about every heated internet debate, that pull this "I am so much better than this" crud. That, and the people who claim that someone is wrong, and they attempt to do some lame hair splitting thing, but they are in fact wrong. AIR is not Flash. But AIR ***** too. It is another crutch for people who are afraid to write real code, yet there are better crutches out there... JQuery. That said, plugin developers for JQuery are code studs... That is what's great about JQuery -- it is for both experts and novices.

I am still waiting for a response as to why Flash is better than QuickTime, which supports AirPlay. What is the great way to display a Flash video on my TV? Drag my Mac Pro into my livingroom? Connect a desktop computer with an HDMI cable and fiddle with a keyboard? So 2005!

I am still waiting to hear why Google Docs is not Flash based and why Google, Microsoft, Yahoo, etc. have never taken a shine to Flash. These are huge companies! Is this also a conspiracy, or are these dummies just not seeing the brilliant capabilities of Flash? Still no answer.

I am still waiting for someone to tell me the inherent barrier that prevents people from using JQuery or (for cases like 3D rendering) a native app instead of Flash? JQuery is easier and free to develop. Native apps are the only way to provide a 3D experience or decent game on any mobile platform.

I am still waiting to see the great Flash game, that will make me want to delete Infinity Blade and pine for an awesome Flash plugin for Safari.

I am still waiting for a good reason why something like Photon isn't better than Flash on Android. I will try to post a video on YouTube showing my experience with Photon, watching a video and playing a game. It is, by far, better than anything I have seen or used on Android. So indeed, iOS does support Flash. It is just that a handful of people want it in a very specific way and want everyone else to have Flash forced on them. Gee, maybe some people like QuickTime better? Maybe some people buy Apple products so they can use Apple's media player instead of Adope's?

So you see, there is something to add to the conversation. You have simply chosen to be the self-appointed moderator, claiming that since Apple has settled this matter, there is nothing to discuss. The proof's in the puddin'. This debate has gone on for a long time, and clearly the only way to settle it is to ask for answers to very reasonable questions, from those who claim this is all a big conspiracy.

Indeed, Apple does have conspiracies, like this book thing. It only hurt Apple. I bought my ebooks from Kindle. iBooks clearly did not meet the cost savings benefits of iTunes or the App Store. Bad Apple! I hope they learned a lesson... But what they really did was help Amazon sell e-books...

Maybe you need reading lessons. Maybe you need to learn about debate. I have contentions that go without a response.

I may post a quick YouTube video showing Photon's Flash capabilities. But if not, I will check back in a week or so to see if anyone has a decent answer.

Or will I get more punditry? "This is just like if your car manufacturer asked you to put Chicken McNuggets in your gas tank, instead of gas" Yes, it is exactly like that!

No -- Flash is a dead platform. People harp on Apple's decision because they are haters. Like DHH says about Rails haters, you have to be doing something innovative to attract haters. I seem to be in the boat too. Wow, imagine that, discussing facts and injecting wit into an otherwise repetitive discussion.

Yes, I will never tell people what to say, or say this discussion is over. This is a free discussion. If you don't like it, go watch Murder She Wrote, as you seem to be a geriatric retiree. This discussion is over FOR YOU.

Let the techspert (me) and the wannabe (rfoil) and the Adobe fanboy (duderRama) discuss it. I have never, and will never, tell duderRama that the debate is over, he writes too much, or anything. I can read and write fast... Like I said, go watch Murder She Wrote.

Oh and duderRama -- maybe you should bother to read my posts. I think you do, but you don't have any answers to my questions, so all you can do is complain that I write too much...

Yes, facts are a real drag. Punditry and rhetoric are so much better. Yes, the open system, and open source bohemians with tattoos and beards doing X at the club and driving their steampunked jalopy to Burning Man.

Oh my word... If you only knew how boring, non-hipster, and corporate (paid to develop) most open source contributors are... Even in the hip world of Rails, it is a bunch of boring dorks...

Of course you think canned content is funny. You seem to thrive on regurgitating canned content from the blogosphere... All the great conspiracy theories as to how Apple killed off Flash on all platforms? Rubbish! Completely canned talking points from the Phandroid blogosphere.

So now, instead of responding to any of my contentions, you basically go the route of ad hominem attacks. Why? Because you have no response to my contentions. Ad hominem attacks are what people resort to when they have nothing meaningful to say. You don't have anything meaningful to say, so you LOL along with the other people who have nothing meaningful to say, but need to play referee to boost their self esteem. This is par for the course on the internet. In every discussion forum, there are self-appointed moderators that love to niggle about netiquette and discussion of the facts, and then proceed to ironically negate what they seem to stand for. Like the "this discussion was over years ago" (yet I am here, posting on it). Or "you were wrong about Flash being phased out on mobile platforms because there is AIR" (but AIR and Flash are different).

So yeah. I am getting Lorem Ipsem canned stuff. Hey, it is actually more clever than the canned netiquette stuff.

Seeing as how there are no responses, you all must agree that:

    1. None of the major websites, Google, Microsoft, Yahoo, etc. have a use for Flash. Indeed, Google uses JavaScript to create their suite of web based office productivity applications.

    2. Flash performs poorly on mobile devices. We're talking seconds per frame, not frames per second. This has been shown with links to two videos showing the lack of improvement of the Flash plugin for Android over the past 2 years.

    3. Adobe admitted that Flash was not an appropriate technology for mobile platforms.

    4. There are no Flash games that compare in awesomeness to something like Infinity Blade on iOS.

    5. iOS users are not missing out on anything. No one was able to provide me a resource that iOS users were denied because of the lack of a Flash plugin in Safari. Even PornHub caters to iOS users.

    6. Photon is a superior Flash experience than the actual Flash plugin on Android. For the very few instances where Flash is the only solution (so far, the Odwalla website, a few indie rock bands) a browser like Photon for iOS is actually superior to Flash on Android.

    7. Most things than can be done in Flash can be done with less effort using JQuery. The things that cannot be done with JQuery, such as 3D rendering, can be done better with native apps. Since Flash cannot perform well enough to even playback a video on a mobile device, it also cannot do 3D rendering on mobile devices.

So, duderRama, are you going to take the low road and continue with ad hominem attacks and be a troll, or are you going to respond to any of these points?

You're right. Apple messed up bigtime not getting Flash on Safari for iOS. If they had a modicum of patience, they would have Flash running on iOS, probably even better than on Android, since it doesn't use a Java Virtual Machine for apps, but runs compiled code.

Yep, Flash does indeed work on some Android devices.

And sure, after this huge scandal of colluding with book publishers, I have less doubt that this was about technology and quality. It was probably always a strategic decision... If people have Flash, they may buy less content from iTunes.

In terms of democratic design, I think most consumers would want Flash, and the ability to AirPlay what's on the entire screen, which came with iOS 5.

Indeed, I was wrong. Flash does have a place on every device, just like HTML or JavaScript. JavaScript was developed by Netscape. All of these are backed by corporations. This was all just a game against Adobe, a company that Apple competes with heavily in other fields, such as movie editing and digital image processing.

That said, I don't have too many issues missing Flash. I do like AirPlay a lot and use it all the time. However, with AirPlay mirroring, there is no reason a full screen Flash video could not be displayed on one's TV.

Indeed, it was a strategic decision. At the very least, they should have offered it as an option, right? Just like on the desktop. You don't have to install Flash on a browser. Heck, you can even install something that seems like Flash, but it isn't. Safari on iOS has absolutely no plugin architecture, or at least on that consumers can modify.

In the past few months, I have realized Apple is just another awful corporation. Maybe one of the worst. In the wake of this publishing scandal, I now see if Apple has hegemony, they will gouge us silly.

All hail Android, Windows, Symbian, Blackberry, WebOS, heck Ubuntu mobile(?).

It all goes to show, Apple is not perfect. Apple is in decline. We had some good times, Apple, but in the end you turned out to be a bunch of richards who have screwed me too many times...

I will do anything in my power (uh, mostly commenting and blogging) to make people aware of all the bugs in Apple products, and try to buy as little as possible from them.

If I buy a Mac application, I will make a point to buy it outside of their App Store, so they don't see a dime.

When my devices are obsolete, I will most likely move to other platforms.

I am too smart for Apple products. They are designed for idiots. Macs will someday just be big iPads and you won't be able to even get into the directories, let alone sudo to have (gasp) some semblance of control.

Ubuntu and virtual Windows FTW, and I think Microsoft will end up having a better smart phone and tablet product line than Assle.

It is history repeating itself. Just like the 80s. The Mac was big doo doo, and then Microsoft ended up having the better strategy. Indeed, I worked with a lot of Mac fanboys in the 90s. They were pathetic. Their Macs hung all the time, and they had like no software. Doom on a Mac was ridiculously slow compared to Windows.

Apple made some good decisions mid 2000s. Intel processors. Great first take on a smart phone. From there, they tended to peak, and now they are in decline.

Good riddance. After this book publishing scandal, and the way they handled this discussion, I now see a world of Apple hegemony is a dystopia. Really, any monopoly is bad, but Apple will be the worst, and they are bent on domination more than anyone. Well, Google does try to rip off everyone and convince people they are better.

I think I was wrong about Microsoft, though. Sure, I would not develop Rails code on Windows, but I can do both. If I get my POSIX env from Ubuntu, and my consumer OS from Microsoft, who needs Apple? Their stuff is not rock solid anymore. I am embarassed that I fell for it. It was true for some time, that Apple products had better quality. I think this is no longer the case. Apple got worse, and their competitors got better...

All the more reason we need lots of players in the game...
