Yesturday I updated my iPhone software and changed my Apple ID password.

Then last night when sending a messege to my ex girlfriend and good friend, the messege sent through fine. However she text back shocked and asked why i had sent her an aggressive and insulting text. She sent me the messege I had supposedly sent her. The first half of the messege was normal but then the second half was someone else's abusive words. Also they insulted me by making comments about my photos. I'm completely confused, worried and paranoid about what has happened. Has someone intercepted the messege and edited it? Has someone hacked my phone? I have never heard of anything like this. I have turned off my phone and changed my password again. Any help would be great, thanks.

Jack.

Unless jailbroken, your phone has not been hacked. This message you sent to your "ex", was this sent as an iMessage?

Did you either set up your phone on someone elses machine or allow someone else to use your computer to update/activate their phone in some way?

Were these SMS messages (green) or iMessages (blue)?

If they were iMessages, it's most likely that someone is set up to use the same e-mail address for Messages. This can happen easily if you've cross contaminated the phones by sharing a copy of iTunes with someone else.

Go to settings>messages>Receive At and make sure that it's your e-mail address there. If it is, give some though to who might have set up or restored their phone on the same computer.

I set up my phone on my computer. No one has used it to update their own phone. However i forgot to say that my email address was hacked several days ago. Could this have something to do with it?

The messeges were SMS green texts.

    Thanks for replying.

If someone has your email address & an iOS device, this would explain what happened. They would then also receive the message, could then edit such & forward to your ex.

After i supposedly sent her the messege i saw that iMessege was turned on, so i turned it off. I must admit I didn't even know about 'iMessege'.

So you think that someone could have somehow got my messege, edited it and then sent it on to my friend via iMessege? I was at the hospital at the time of sending the messege. I did actually see someone with an iPad in the waiting room, there were about 20-25 people in the room to. No one looked like they would write something as horrible as they did though. Hmm

Yep. That's exactly what happened. iMessage, by design, will appear on all devices using the same Apple ID. I can only suggest you stop using this Apple ID.

Sorry I'm being really stupid. But I changed my email password since it was hacked and they would have needed that right? If not, now that I have turned my iMessege off, they can't access or receive anything from my iPhone right? Thanks.

Unfortunately, no. If they activated iMessage on their device, using your Apple ID, before you changed your password, they will continue to receive your iMessages as long as you continue to use that Apple ID. The only way to stop this would be to physically get a hold of their device & turn iMessage off...obviously something you can't do. Thus, your only choice is to stop using this Apple ID for iMessage.

Thank you! Ok so I will delete this Apple ID, and create a new one with a new email address and leave iMessege OFF and just to make sure this should sort it? Thank you so much, very much appriciated

    You're welcome.

You cannot actually delete an Apple ID, all you can do is stop using it. So, yes, remove this "hacked" Apple ID from all of your devices& stop using it. Have everyone you know stop using it as well. This should put an end to your problem.

A phone number I know,(but have not yet saved to my phone and have deleted any message threads associated with this person) sometimes appears at the top of my messages section, but with no iMessage just the number, why is this..? Could my messages be being intercepted?
