    1) My earlier point about Apple being damned if they did and damned if they didn't (did anybody bother to read that?) was apparently missed.  Here, I'll re-state it very clearly...  Originally, volume buttons could not be used to trip the shutter.  Most people are right handed, so Apple chose to orient the iPhone such that right side up had the screen based shutter button on the right, making it easy to touch with one of your right fingers.  After Apple actually tried to satisfy people by allowing the volume buttons to trip the shutter, if they then re-oriented the camera so that right side up was with volume buttons up, that would then make the majority of users unhappy because their photos would then be upside down. There are still a majority of users that prefer using the screen based button on the right.

    2) Results of experiment:

      a) Took iPhone photo with volume buttons up (forcing a upside down image with associated EXIF flag).

      b) iPhone: Photo, email present photo re-oriented right side up

      c) iPad: Photo, email also present photo right side up

      d) Desktop Mac: Apple Mail, iPhoto, Finder, Lighroom, Photoshop, Pixelmator all have picture right side up.  Note that some of these 3rd party apps have preferences that can be set to handle automatic re-orientation differently.

      e) Safari presents photo upside down.  It doesn't re-orient based on EXIF data, nor should it. Web site images should not be re-oriented because this would break the way web sites are designed to work.

    So, my points are still:

    1) Photo imaging S/W should orient photos based on intent from the EXIF information. This is the new standard. The camera should not re-orient the photo.  If I want a photo to be upside down because I take it that way, that's how I want it.

    2) This issue is due to a change. Change causes growing pains. If people can't adapt they're going to be very frustrated and angry at the world.

    3) Everyone is free to purchase a mobile phone from other companies. There are a lot of good phones out there. Perhaps some of you would be happier with an Android phone, but no matter what device you get there will be some things you don't like. In my opinion iPhone is the best, and I know other phones do some things better and some things worse. Life's choices are full of trade-offs.

    The Hidden Wizard--

You would have to use post processing to do it.

Note that modern video cameras are designed to take videos in standard HD, which is landscape 1920 horizontal by 1080 vertical.  Movie theaters, HD TV, and TV manufacturers build their equipment this way. Very few people would be comfortable watching a sideways sized video even if the image was oriented correctly. The world is viewing in HD format, which is landscape.  This is why the iPhone is designed to take videos this way, in HD. So, there is no need for EXIF rotation data in HD video. When you take videos use landscape, not landscape, because the iPhone is a HD video device.

    snip

Got nothing to do with being right handed. They wanted it to act like a normal camera and normal cameras have their shutter button in the top right. This now makes the iphone's camera it's upright position, but now causing the internal camera to be upside down. How many normal cameras do you buy with their internal camera being upside down???

That's right. That was my point to you, to proove the internal camera is upside down, because YOU said that you could not get your computer to see stuff upside down. Now you do.

You just don't get it... sigh... I AM NOT DISPUTING EXIF. I am disputing the fact that if the camera is held in it's upright position and the exif data says that position should rotate the photo 180 degrees, then this tells me the CAMERA IS UPSIDE DOWN. How many normal cameras take photos upside down in their upright position???? argh!!

If exif is ignored - SUCH AS WHEN TAKING VIDEO - then video will be taken upside down. What are you not understanding here?

Please show me where in the 'new standard' does it mention support for video...

No, this issue is due to an oversight which will hopefully be rectified asap. If it was due to change, people would be complaining about having to use the volume as a shutter and to change it back to the old way, which if that was the case, then there wouldn't be a thread, people would just ignore the Apple ads and just use it the old way. Derr!! Nobody (as far as I can tell) is ****** off with having to use it this way now. They're ****** off because using it is causing photo and video to be upside down. In other words PEOPLE LIKE USING THE VOLUME AS A SHUTTER but it's causing everything to be upside down, especially video.

My statement, however immature it may seem to you, is nevertheless correct. As far as emotionality of it, well, I apologize, I do find it hard to remain calm when I see an idiot flooding the forum.

This thread sure has its share of spoiled, instant gratification, crying babies.  Just 5 years ago none of us could even take a picture and email it with a hand held computer.  Now, everyone wants instant perfection. That'll never happen. Technology is an evolutionary process, and in time this issue will be dealt with. Perhaps Apple will provide preference settings in future camera releases so people can set the orientation behavior the way they want it.

As for me, I would not be happy with volume buttons up as right side up because I prefer using it the other way, and I think a lot of people do.

I think throwing emotional fits, calling people idiots, and telling them to "shut up" is indicative of our general social devolution. I like technology because it evolves. Too bad such a significant portion of the human race can't also evolve.

I was doing exactly that 9 years ago using my (then cutting edge) Sony Ericsson T610.

Re: Sideways video and upside down video

Take a $1200 hand held HD video cam, such as my Sony and turn it sideways to take a video.  After download it will play a sideways video on your TV display. Take same camera and turn it upside down and you'll get an upside down picture.

Again, again, again, I bet there are still more people that use the iPhone buttons down than are using buttons up. I like buttons down and use the screen shutter better.

I think this will eventually be dealt with in a future release. Isn't patience a virtue anymore, or appreciation of what you have that was science fiction just a few years ago?  Did everyone under 30 grow up spoiled?

This forum is now dead as far as I'm concerned.

May be you, jlbmacuser, aka John Benford, ought to realize that not everybody is like yourself. And when people do complain about issues that doesn't neccessarily mean that they're the "crying babies". And for once, allow the assumption that is is you who's not evolving at the proper pace.

Does that Sony video camera take upside down video when held upright?

Does Sony advertise the camera being used in its upright position?

My iPhone takes upside down video when held upright the way Apple advertise it.

What exactly are you not understanding, or are you that stubborn that you can't admit that you were wrong? Are you that shallow of a person?

Although I bought this phone to have a video camera and 8 megapixel camera on hand at all times (didn't Apple advertise, this is the only camera you will ever need), I have since went back to taking videos and pics with my other cameras. As for someone mentioning we are all spoiled brats for complaining, I don't think it is being a spoiled brat to expect something to work as it is advertised. Someone also mentioned that some of us should just purchase other phones if we are not happy. I can assure you that I will be one who will if this issue isn't addressed. I love everything about this phone but that. But, having a 9 mo old granddaughter who is growing and changing everyday makes it the camera and video very important to me. I do have my phone with me at all times but I don't always have my camera. I am just so disappointed that something that should be so simple as downloading pics and videos has to be so darn complicated.

You make a really good point. I do think a majority of users, though, still use the camera with home button on the right, or volume buttons down. One way or another a large number of people will have orientation issues until the photo s/w catches up.

I'm having the same issue as everyone else and it doesn't sound like as of yet there is a fix. Funny thing is I posted some of the upside down pictures to facebook and was prepared to adjust them on facebook. The pictures all came out right side up without any adjustment.
