In the case of an iMac, if a G5, bad capacitors can cause that.
Overheating of a graphics card can also cause graphics anomalies.
If the Mac is a tower, replacement of the graphics card is esy.
In the case of an iMac, the entire main board needs replaced.
You can try to blow dust out of the computer and increase airflow around the machine (use a fan) to see if it is a heat related issue.

If you have any temps in the 70°C/160°F range, that's likely it.
